NCIS - worth it?

According to wikipedia, in the ep "Honor Code" he suggests about taking the wall out as a possible by not stated as how he does it.
And if removing a boat from a building ain't red-hot series mythology excitement, I just don't know what is. :p

I've seen every episode, and will likely continue to watch as long as it's on the air--since I'm already so invested in it.

But honestly, if I was going to start now, I don't know that I would. I started watching after seeing the JAG pilot crossover--thought it looked interesting. And, admittedly, the first few seasons are really good.

However, the production stuff has gone through sever cycles of comings and goings (guys leaving, returning, etc.), which has definitely had an effect on the writing.

The show has become insanely formulaic, even for a procedural. This is especially noticeable in bottle episodes where I think they literally use some kind of script template and just cut in paste the story/dialog.

Harmon was outstanding in the early years, but pretty much just phones it in at this point.

If you want to go, I'd suggest just watching through the Holly years.
Agreed. Love this show to bits :), but it has become really formulaic as of late. Don't think that Harmon phones it in, imo. He still does a good job as Gibbs.

As for the series as a whole, it's still better than some of the shows that are on the air.

I thought the return of Jackson in the last episode was a nice touch. Though, I wonder if they'd originally intended to bring in DJE and it didn't happen for whatever reason...

Well, if they brought in David James Elliott, it would answer who won and lost the series finale-ending coin-toss. I'm not sure they'd want to do that.

Funny thing about Jackson... I saw A Few Good Men the other day for the first time in forever. I had totally forgotten he was one of the JAG officers/Kaffee's superior. Type cast.

It was a nice touch. And a great surprise, I thought. I really enjoyed seeing the character again.

And he is good in A Few Good Men, even if it is a small part.

I do agree..it was very nice to see John M. Jackson again on NCIS. But the finale itself had me a little pissed and left a lot of unanswered questions. I would have preferred the crash scene in the episode "Berlin" to this finale!!!' But there were some good moments in the episode. The ending just had me go..huh!?!

I am looking forward to season 11! Season 10 DVD comes out August 20th and I'm saving up for it!! :) I've read that it has a lot of cool special features on it this time...more so than the other DVDs previously. Looking forward to buying and watching that baby!!

I love NCIS, and have the first 7 seasons on DVD (season 8 onwards not yet available here).

There is a great chemistry amongst the cast. Although they have quite a few stand-alone episodes, they also some long arcs too such as La Grenouille,Ari, Morten Bell, the Port-to-Port killer, etc.

Catching random episodes will sometimes miss some of this, and the significance of some recurring characters such as Mike Franks or Tobias Fornell.

I still remember, years ago, when we used to have weekly NCIS threads here, but that waned after a while.

I still watch it out of habit, but it's just so silly now. I'm still honestly shocked that NCIS:Red, with its transforming trucks, didn't get picked up given how popular both shows are though.

I wasn't surprised that they didn't pick up red. Although NCIS has big viewership, I don't think LA would survive long without the NCIS lead in. With all that said, to the original poster, I really like the show and it is one of the very few TV shows I make a point to watch. It is heavy into characterization and the stories are well written. I am reading a lot of rumors lately the upcoming season will be the last, and with the way the latest story arc is turning, I could see that.

The cheesy truck and the new main characters were actually the reason I was hoping they would let it die even faster than it showed up.
Just like JAG in its day, NCIS has now turned into some CIA crap again and NCIS:LA is such a generic show that it doesn't even warrant the name anymore. It's long overdue that they let the whole once-great franchise ride off into the sunset.

Well, yeah, they couldn't help themselves by trying to make the characters super important. Once they had a Mossad agent join, I knew it was over. :p

Well was a Mossad agent much worse then an ex Secret Service agent on the presidential protection detail, or was it just Air Force One? Who was junior to an ex MP was also a Scout Sniper and her partner the ex Baltimore, as in The Wire and Homicide:Life on the Street, homicide detective.

It was no better on its parent JAG where except for Mr. Roberts, Purple Heart awardee for a tramatic amputation in Afganistan, the JAG lawyers were a Marine, a fighter pilot, a submariner and a SEAL

You forgot Kate and Meg. They were actually somewhat "real," oddly from back when JAG was what NCIS should've been.

While it was nice they brought Parker back a couple of times, I would have preferred Needham. Alas it didn't work out.

I think the best lawyer JAG ever had was Manetti. The character background was every bit as crazy as the others' but in a "fun" sort of way.

Plus, aside from being one of the most beautiful women to ever walk the face of the Earth, Tomita gave an outstanding performance--and often the most "believable" as a lawyer. Which is funny because she was so terrible in Bab5. (Though, that was probably due to the material.)

And in TKKII she wasn't much better, but she was a noob. In any case, I found her performance to be really surprising. It's too bad they didn't keep her around longer.

Well, an ex-Secret Service agent wasn't really tied up into weird global conspiracies and whatnot.
If you watch the first couple of seasons when Kate was around, it was still grounded in just mundane crimes involving military officers - basically when it was called Navy: NCIS.
But yeah, at this point, they're basically two branches of CTU at this point.

I also forgot the office manager, Gunny, who was also a Force Recon Marine

Never got into that show. The first episode I saw was that JAG episode were the entire cast behaved like assholes around Harmon Rabb & Co. And the second episode I remember was some kind of Air Force One rip off that was extremely cringe worthy.

Sounds like you saw the back door pilot on JAG then the first Navy NCIS episode where the ex FBI agent turned NCIS agent from the pilot was replaced with Kate, an about to resign Secret Service agent recruited by Gibbs into NCIS. About a third of the way through the first season McGee the "probie" moved from reoccurring tech support to member of Gibbs' team.
