NCC-2000-A?

In the future, only one planet has a culture worth naming things after, and it's Earth. And not just Earth, but Western Europe and North America.

^^Well, one would expect that there would be runabouts named for non-Terrestrial rivers, but there aren't.

There was a Danube-class U.S.S. Yolja named for the Yolja River on Bajor in the book The Dominion: Olympus Descending (http://startrek.wikia.com/wiki/USS_Yolja).

No material we have seen suggests that every runabout manufactured by Starfleet has been assigned to Deep Space 9 or the number and names of every Danube-class vessel in the fleet.

But wouldn't the rivers thing have come from Sisko, since commanders name the runabouts/shuttles under their command? Or was Riker naming Titan's shuttle's a special case?

Well, the whole class of runabouts is the Danube class, so unless Sisko oversaw their creation (which is admittedly possible), I doubt he's responsible for the use of riverine names as a whole.

I'm fairly certain that DS9 made reference to Sisko naming one of the Runabouts. The Yolja was named by Kira.

Ok so all of the runabouts have river names then. I didn't realize that, I thought it just the DS9 based ones.

But you bring up an interesting point. The Star Trek The Next Generation Technical Manual states that Picard named the captain's yacht Calypso on the 1701-D, Sisko is seen naming a new runabout after a river (cannot remember the name or the episode), and Riker named shuttles after jazz artists. After this evidence, I guess we can presume that commanders are free to name the auxiliary craft under their command.

I presume that this privelege does not extend to starships.

^ A Singular Destiny will establish that three of the shuttlecraft on the Aventine are the Kor, the Kang, and the Koloth. Captain's privilege. :D

There's a runabout Coprates in the Shatnerverse MU trilogy named for a river on terraformed Mars.

RE: Miranda and what Christopher said; my point was actually that Miranda is a normal female first name like Phoebe. like, for example Miranda Frost in Die Another Day. Miranda Richardson the actress...

^^Hey, just trying to offer a friendly suggestion. If I were naming a major starship after a moon, it would seem reasonable to make it a major moon. No reason there couldn't be a starship Calypso, except for the redundancy with the yacht, but I figure the in-story reason for the choice of name would be different.

All constructive input is appreciated guys. Thanks. I'm actually glad this has gotten the attention of some of the tbbs writting staff.:) This "Fan-fic" is a fairly old idea and I have been wanting to get it going recently as I have aspirations for it to be more than a fan-fic eventualy.

As for Calypso. Yes, it is a fairly minor Saturnian moon, but a moon nonetheless and well, there's alot of starships out there. :techman: But the main inspiration comes from the not so minor Sea Goddess which is very well known. That's why I think it'll work. Thoughts ARE welcome.

So hey, I am planning on writing up a dossier of my characters, should I post it up here or maybe there might be some interested in reviewing it privately?

At this point, it might be more appropriate to post specifics in the fan-fic forum. There are issues concerning posting fan-fic story ideas and specifics in this forum as the professionals who post here cannot read them for various legal mumbo-jumbo reasons. Posting your character dossier may not be technically the same as posting story ideas as such, but would be treading awfully close.

Ah, nevermind then. Thanks.

I presumed the Miranda class was named for the legal term, like the Constitution class.

Huh? Why would the Federation Starfleet name a starship after a 1966 decision by the United States Supreme Court that protected arrestees against coerced self-incrimination? That would be a pretty obscure bit of historical trivia to people in the 23rd century.

Presumably it's named after the character from Shakespeare's The Tempest (a precedent I followed in The Buried Age by having a Miranda-class ship called the Portia), or after the Uranian moon named in honor of the Shakespeare character.

Indeed. It would be too close for comfort, so I'd recommend not. The Fan-Fic forum, I'm sure would welcome you there though.

I would have to agree here. I don't think the "Female equation" should matter as long as it's named after a fictional or historical figure and not just being named "Mary Ann" for the sake of having a female name.

Even then... it's not like something perverse is happening due to the ship being represented as "Female".

My experience with other "Fan-fic" writers(god I hate that term...) has never been very good, so we'll see.

Oh I don't know - I had a go the other night and quite enjoyed it - I do write but only non-fiction, it was quite fun to do something creative. I think the human-targ bestiality put some people off. :techman:
