NCC-2000-A?

Well, is there any reason that the TNG Excelsior can't be Sulu's ship? The Excelsior and Miranda classes lasted a century on screen, which was also the estimated life of the Galaxy-class ships.

Besides, it'd be nice to have at least one of the hero ships have a nice long life.

No, no particular reason it can't be. I agree that it could be Sulu's ship. I was just playing Devil's Advocate. ;)

Isn't Calypso the name of the Enterprise's Captain's Yacht?

The E-D's yacht, yes. I think the E-E's yacht has a different name.

The one destroyed in Insurrection was named Cousteau, the one destroyed in A Time to Be Born was also named Calypso, and I believe Taking Wing named the third yacht Calypso II.

I knew about this, but the Enterprise's, Calypso shares the same registry, being an auxilery craft. So mine should be safe as a full starship ;)

My Calypso is based off of Saturn's moon(Since my car is a Saturn) and by extension the sea Goddess.

By the way I'll be writing this as a full novel, not a fanfic, so Calypso is probably the way to go over Excelsior as much as I like the latter.

Also... you named your car? :vulcan: "I find it works better with an identity."

Odd choice. Saturn does have a moon named Calypso, but it's a tiny and very minor one. Are you maybe thinking of Jupiter's moon Callisto?

But Callisto has already been established as a Luna-class starship if he wants to reconcile his fan fiction with canon and the Star Trek novels. Some later author might want to use the Callisto.

I have a Luna-class U.S.S. Calypso in my fan fiction because it follows the natural satellite naming convention of this class and it is the name of Jacques Cousteu's research ship. I made the ship as part of another twelve unit production run of the Luna-class.

1. I know this.
2. Yes, she is my ship.

I am thinking of Calypso. My car is a Saturn, so it's named after one of
Saturn's moons along with the sea Goddess of the same name.

^^It just seems odd that Starfleet would name a ship after such a minor moon, unless it's already run through all the bigger ones. There are plenty of Saturnian moons that don't have ships named for them yet as far as we know, like Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Dione, Hyperion, Iapetus, and Phoebe.

It's his fanfic. He can name his ship Calypso, Callisto, Colon Blow, or whatever the heck he wants. It's no skin off anyone else's nose...

^^Hey, just trying to offer a friendly suggestion. If I were naming a major starship after a moon, it would seem reasonable to make it a major moon. No reason there couldn't be a starship Calypso, except for the redundancy with the yacht, but I figure the in-story reason for the choice of name would be different.

I don't think I like the idea of a USS Phoebe, takes the idea of considering ships as females to a disturbing level, and yes I am well aware that Phoebe was one of the Titans, perhaps the Phebe spelling would work better in that instance?

Maybe so, but there have been a few ships named Phoebe in the Royal Navy so I guess there's precedent for it:)

Also, Calypso was female. As are the majority of the mythological namesakes of the Luna-Class ships: Amalthea, Callisto, Europa, Galatea, Io, Luna, and Rhea. And of the names of Saturnian moons I mentioned above, Tethys and Dione are also female. Then of course there's the Hera, which is being discussed in another thread.

I was surprised when a saw the names of the twelve Luna-class vessels because I was expecting that at least one of them would have been named for a fictional moon outside of the solar system.
