NCAA Football 2008 Discussion - It All Starts Here.

Seconded, CV. Wouldn't it be awesome were they to win today, and totally screw up OSU's season?

Nope not in the least. Besides, the game is being cancelled, since on the way to Columbus the Wolverines can't seem to get past Toledo.

Oh, please. Come up with your own material, Neroon. That one's been goin' around for weeks now.

And let's be honest, here: Ohio State's won exactly the same amount of games against elite-quality opposition this year that Michigan has—that is to say, none at all. :p

Go Blue!

More important than this exchange of pleasantries, of course, is the fact that Rutgers, after a 1-5 start, becomes bowl-eligible today with a win over Army in Piscataway. :techman:

Hey, when you find quality you might as well stick with it. It's a darned sight better than anything original I could try to create, anyhow. Besides... none of that other stuff matters today. Not the record, not the schedules, not the coverage, none of the other games, nada. This is the best rivalry game in the sport of college football.

Fair enough, so long as you're crediting that anonymous Buckeye scab that originated it. ;)

[And, partisanship aside, I actually laughed out loud when I heard that one a few weeks ago. It's freakin' hilarious. :techman:]

Yep ... and that's why Michigan has a real chance. Is it a 50% chance? By no means. But it sure is a puncher's chance.

I'd just like to see a good game. Hell, I'm sure OSU would prefer to defeat a worthy adversary than simply trounce an incompetent group of Wolverines. Victory's all the sweeter that way.

"They came to play ... and we still whupped 'em!"

I'll go on record and guarantee that Michigan covers the points today, but Ohio State will still win comfortably. Tressel won't willingly run up the score on them, because he respects the history and the program too much. I tihnk alot of the dire predictions for tihs game stem from the fact that Michigan not only lost to an uncharacteristically sub-par Toledo, but they also completely dominated by an average Illinois and lost to Northwestern (both at home). Those are two teams Ohio St defeated soundly. Even with that, it's as you said.... this game gets each team's energy up like no other. Maybe there was a time when Michigan St was the "bigger game" for some of the Wolverines. Not any more. Tressel has seen to that (6-1, baby!). However..... in two years at most, Rich-Rod will have things back where they should be, and Tressel & Co. had better adapt and do so fast.

But for today, just bring on the Game!

Vaughn, good luck to you today. May neither team be injured severely.

This is the best rivalry game in the sport of college football.

It may be the best game in college Football, but it didn't produce the best "play" in college Football. ;)

I wonder what that says about the Cal/Stanford game anyway. Other than that one big play, this game hasn't really been that memorable. Kind of sad since it's hyped the week before, and then completely ignored the afterwards until next year.

In a way that's almost better, because it leaves the game to the real fans of each echool and not to media hype.

Huzzah! Texas doesn't lose Muschamp! It's been frustrating for the Longhorns to continually lose their DC.
Why? Don't tell me Mack Brown lost Auburn's phone number.

I am utterly and irrevocably opposed to a playoff.

I wouldn't mind the 'right kind' of playoff, but personally, I miss the days when after a wild New Years' Day, #5 could wind up as the National Champion. Of course, those were also the days that #1 sometimes played #9 or 10, too... :)
Really? I don't. 1977 and Notre Dame jumping from #5 to #1 over #2 Alabama despite both having the same record still rankles, especially after that 1966 crap.

What I liked about it was that at least #3 or 4 had a chance, when they don't now.

1977 is an interesting post-season to look at:

Alabama (10-1) was ranked #3 going into the bowls, so they would have had no chance under the current system, anyway. They destroyed #8 Ohio State (9-2) 35-6.

#5 Notre Dame (10-1) dominated undefeated #1 Texas (11-0) 38-10.

#2 Oklahoma (10-1) stumbled against #6 Arkansas (10-1) 31-6.

#4 Michigan (10-1) was upset by #13 Washington (8-4) 27-20.

The choice came down to a Notre Dame team that lost to unranked Ole Miss, but had a very impressive bowl win over unbeaten Texas or a Crimson Tide team that lost to a Nebraska team that was better than Ole Miss, but beat a less impressive bowl opponent.

The final vote came down:

1. Notre Dame (37 1/3) 11-1 1,180
2. Alabama (19 1/3) 11-1 1,132
3. Arkansas (5 1/3) 11-1 1,011
4. Texas (2) 11-1 797

For the third year in a row, Beanie Wells breaks off a 50+ yd run for a TD!!!!!

Gotta go looking for that pair of gold pants........

Different year, same result for Michigan. I've had to sit through some truly inept Wolverine offensive performances the past couple seasons in this game, and this year isn't looking any different.

Michigan is just a bad offensive team this year, and it shows. You can't go to Columbus and win with an offense that doesn't even get first downs...

It would be nice to see Tressel give Boeckman some quality time this afternoon for Ohio State. It is, after all, Senior Day at Ohio State.

Ummmm. okay, so I was a bit off on Michigan being able to cover the points today.

And in case anyone is curious, after watchign James Laurinaitis and seeing the eyeblack:

John 17:1 - "When Jesus had said this, he raised his eyes to heaven and said, "Father, the hour has come. Give glory to your son, so that your son may glorify you,"

Unbelievable. SYRACUSE beats Notre Dame 24-23, after scoring the winning TD with about 45 secs to go. And then ND misses a 53 yd field goal as time runs out. Wo, 28-13w... just wow!

And LSU is hurting against Ole Miss at the end of the 3rd quarter.

UNC gets destroyed by NCSt 41-10

What a day.

Not really a good day for me. I'm very sick of losing to Ohio State every single fucking year...

5 straight? Thats just pathetic...
