NCAA Football 2008 Discussion - It All Starts Here.

Strange as this might sound, I'm on Rich-Rod's side in this. I've seen some awfully terrible things said by fans of various teams: Ohio St, Michigan, Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma, etc. Rich-Rod's been mercilessly hammered this year, even though everybody has been saying from Day One that it'd take time to remold the Wolverines back into a contender. What he said to them could be applied any number of places, but frankly.... I can't blame him for it, although I don't have the text in front of me to quote in this thread.

I don't know the particulars of this story, but a head coach of a major college football team is going to have to have thick skin. That's part of why he's paid the big bucks. Calling the fans out isn't going to help, in fact it only makes him look worse.

It's not himself he's defending. It's the players on his team, the guys who decided to stick around and tough it out and are having to put up with the ridiculous things people are saying. And I have to say it's a darned sight better than the "I'm a man" rant that the Oklahoma St coach went on last year.

I don't particularly like Rodriguez, granted, but I wonder if he was a good fit for Michigan. They're proponents of power football and local boys making good. RR favors California recruits with speed. While winning cures many ills, you have to wonder if he'll still be unpopular a few years into his tenure because they're not winning the Michigan way.

To his credit, he's sticking up for Carr's kids.

I was thinking the same thing when Michigan hired him. He runs a completely different kind of offense from what's ever been run there in Ann Arbor before. Logic alone means it will take time to get the right kind of players to run it.

Back when Ohio St had Earle Bruce, there was a steady decline in talent in part because he seemed to be so regionally bound in recruiting. Whatever folks want to say about his successor, John Cooper, he did really expand things in recruiting and in offense. It's entirely possible Rich-Rod will do the same thing. And I think someone the other day said that he was 3-8 in his first season at WVU.... then went like 8-3 or 9-3 the very next season.

Well it would be the week of Ohio State-Michigan unless I came in here and talked a bit of smack.

Those Suckeyes are going down. Doesn't matter if we're playing the game in in horse footwear stadium or not. No way the poisonous tree fruits with their silly helmets (complete with stickers they get for putting their pants on the right way) are going to beat Michigan. No way, no how.

Ahhh, Michigan football. The only sports team that gets varsity letters and can't read them.

As opposed to a student body that celebrates dotting an "i" because for them it's a major academic accomplishment?

Creating a tradition performed by a band, both of which are consistently named among the greatest in all of college football ;)

Well it's really a heartwarming feat when Ohio State's best and brightest get together once a week and properly spell "Ohio". Thats pretty tricky for most of the people who go to OSU. Thats why it gets accolades. Pity accolades...

Ball State wins again to go to 11-0. And garners another week of attention on Letterman's show.

Rich Rodriguez has a lot to learn about "sticking around and toughing it out" himself. He sure didn't show much loyalty to his West Virginia players when he left them right after a heartbreaking loss to end the regular season.

That's still a hefty price to pay for a defensive coordinator, especially when it doesn' tlook like Brown is going anywhere anytime soon.

Puppies and Playoffs - two things I support. :techman:

I love Georgia Tech's offense. Their triple option was a beautiful thing to behold as they pounded out 472 rushing yards against Miami last night.

Personally I kind of like the idea of a playoff involving the Top 8 teams and utilizing the existing bowls. Something like this (picking bowls at random):

#1 vs. #8 Sugar
#2 vs. #7 Fiesta
#3 vs. #6 Cotton
#4 vs. #5 Holiday

Then the following weeks winners meet in the Rose and Orange Bowls and then the National Championship Game at a neutral site. They could rotate the bowls every year as well.

Huzzah! Texas doesn't lose Muschamp! It's been frustrating for the Longhorns to continually lose their DC.
Why? Don't tell me Mack Brown lost Auburn's phone number.

I am utterly and irrevocably opposed to a playoff.

I wouldn't mind the 'right kind' of playoff, but personally, I miss the days when after a wild New Years' Day, #5 could wind up as the National Champion. Of course, those were also the days that #1 sometimes played #9 or 10, too... :)
Really? I don't. 1977 and Notre Dame jumping from #5 to #1 over #2 Alabama despite both having the same record still rankles, especially after that 1966 crap.
