NCAA Football 2008 Discussion - It All Starts Here.

Was that slow start more USC's fault or Stanford's doing? I could see both being the cause, but given what happened last year I'd think USC would be well guarded against any overconfidence

Stanford's gotten a lot better. Remember, they beat Oregon State before Oregon State beat USC. And they gave Oregon a run for their money too. They're not a "gimme" any more. It's tough to recuit premium athletes when your academic standards are so high, but Harbaugh seems to have righted the program.

I had forgotten about that win over Oreg. St. Guess I was just remembering last year's performance a little too well.

Good point about the toughness of the recruiting there. It'd be interesting to see a series of games between them and Notre Dame. The Irish supposedly have extremely igh academic standards as well. I cannot say whether they've relaxed them in recent years or not, but on the assumption they haven't I think itd' be interesting to see the two goup against each other on a regular basis.

Stanford had a great opening drive, and played some tough defense at first. They led 10-3 after the first quarter.

USC out scored them 42-13 after that. And 6 of those 13 came on the last play of the game, when it was far out of reach.

Many USC fans are rooting for Oregon State to win out and go to the Rose Bowl. They are tired of facing big-10 teams in the Rose Bowl and want to go to Sugar Bowl or Fiesta Bowl to face an SEC or big-12 team. The flaw in that is that if USC doesn't go to the Rose Bowl then they are not guaranteed to be in another BCS bowl game, though the odds are they will get that chance if they finish 11-1.

I am fine with going to the Rose Bowl as long as we face JoePa and Penn State, which is the most likely scenario. I don't want to see a rematch with Ohio State, especially since we play them again next year. An Oregon State-Penn State rematch in the Rose Bowl is not that interesting either.

Gottqa agree with you on that, Cyrus, except I wouldn't mind a Penn St / Oreg. St rematch. The first game was a blowout this year, and it's safe to say this is not the same Oregon St team. It's be a more entertaining game for sure.

Is the Rose Bowl still bound to take a Pac-10 team, or may they substitute another if they so desire?

I'd really love to see Pitt-Penn State if it's possible.

I am also hoping for a USC/Penn State Rose Bowl.

I would definitely make the trip for that match-up.

Rose Bowl is bound to take the pac-10 & big-10 champs unless they make it to the NC game. So if Oregon State wins the next 2 games they are in.

Cyrus beat me to it, but yeah JM1776 the Rose Bowl is contractually obligated to take the Big 10 and PAC-10 champions. And like some others I have no desire to see an Oregon State/Penn State rematch nor do I want to see a USC/Ohio State game either.

Why not Oregon St & Penn St again? I can understand the POV of the two have already played, but again that was earlier in the season. I'm positive this would be a better game, with Oregon St having more than a passing chance to win. I admit I'm a traditionalist, although that goes only so far.

I'm sure it would be a better game too, but for me it's one I've already seen. I prefer my bowl matchups to include two teams that haven't faced each other yet. For example, I'ld love to see a Utah/Ohio State game or a Boise State/Ohio State game. If OSU does actually win the PAC-10 I'll be hoping for someone besides Penn State to win the Big 10.

Well, I can respect that... even if I severely doubt it will happen. Michigan St just does not have the talent and discipline to beat Penn St. And Oregon St has two tough, tough games left. But... stranger things have happened time and again.

How about Oregon St. / Ohio St.? It can be the OSUses Bowl. :D

That's still a sore spot with me: When FSU had to play Florida a second time for the national title after having already beaten them, it was clearly advantage Gators: Bowden and his staff had had a year to come up with new blitz packages they specifically unveiled in the first game against UF, and they'd succeeded brilliantly. When round two commenced, only a few weeks later, they really had nothing new in the bag, and Florida trounced them. I'm still convinced the Seminoles were robbed of a national title that year.

I remember that year. It was indeed an odd thing to have the same two teams playing a second time in the year. But I wouldn't call it being "robbed". You can't guarantee that FSU wins against anyone else that might have gone instead of Florida. Plus, if the Gators had a second look at the Seminoles game, then the reverse is true as well.

I forget who the other realistic challengers would have been, though. For some reason, I seem to think it was funny how the Florida fans were lobbying for a "second shot" and yet years later so many disdained it because it sent Texas to the title game against USC. Ah, well.... such are the vagaries of college ball.

Let's hear it for BCS chaos!

:guffaw: - wouldn't it be great if Oklahoma beats Texas Tech, making THREE Big 12 South teasms with one loss? It really wreak havoc with the Heisman rae, too!

Yeah, it's hard to say a team was robbed of the NC when they lose 52-20. Having to play the Gators twice in a year is always bad luck, but loss like that just made it seem like the previous game was a fluke win, especially since FSU just gave up in the second half.

By the way, I saw on the news that Rich Rodriguez, who has coached Michigan to it's first 8 loss season ever, in 129 years (wow!) has told unhappy fans that they need to 'get a life' and 'worry about more important things like the economy.' With his multi-million dollar contract, I'm not sure he needs to be telling Michigan's blue-collar fanbase about the economy, especially since the Wolverines are one of the few escapes from real life many of them have.

Strange as this might sound, I'm on Rich-Rod's side in this. I've seen some awfully terrible things said by fans of various teams: Ohio St, Michigan, Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma, etc. Rich-Rod's been mercilessly hammered this year, even though everybody has been saying from Day One that it'd take time to remold the Wolverines back into a contender. What he said to them could be applied any number of places, but frankly.... I can't blame him for it, although I don't have the text in front of me to quote in this thread.

Blah blah blah.

Fortunately, I'm half past give a shit what you two would call it. :p

We was robbed, I tell you. Robbed!

Precisely my point. Florida was far more talented, yet FSU found the heart and scheme to beat them once. That should have been enough.

As a famous internet guru says, "If you disagree with me, you are wrong." :techman:
