NCAA Football 2008 Discussion - It All Starts Here.

vandy lost.
sigh..
i just hope this is a lesson and not a start of a trend.
they had so many three and outs in the second half from what little i heard.

Oregon is beating UCLA at the moment, but it's bad news when leading rusher is the third string QB and your leading receiver is the fifth string QB.

The new #1 should be Texas, they earned it. As long as my beloved Crimson Tide stay in the top 2, I'll be happy. We really don't need to be #1 right now -- they are so young! They don't really know how to deal with the pressure. And schitzophrenic Ole Miss is next on the schedule.

And Florida beat the tar out of LSU!

It has been an interesting week of College Football, the best sport on the face of the Earth. :techman:

JM's Top Twenty-Five, Week Ending October 11th, 2008

1 – Alabama (6-0)

Though both Longhorns and Sooners fans might protest, the Tide hangs on to number one because their win at Georgia is ever so slightly more impressive than UT's defeat of OU at a neutral site.

2 – Texas (6-0)

Though I'm not convinced they'll run the table, and they'll be clinging to some wounded Tigers' tails next Saturday, they're still the team of the hour.

3 – Penn State (7-0)

It's a cinch Michigan can't hang with these guys. Can Ohio State or Sparty? Frankly, I'm not seein' it ... and I'd really appreciate it if the Lions would put OSU out of our collective misery.

4 – Oklahoma State (6-0)

Well, until now, all they'd done was KO palookas, and it's been essentially glossed over in the afterglow of Texas' more high-profile triumph, but the Cowboys' win at Missouri was arguably the weekend's most impressive victory. Can't argue with their place in the Top Five, at least for a couple of weeks.

5 – Utah (7-0)

Assuming both teams hold up their end, this late-November clash between Utah and BYU will be for a BCS bid ... and, if they're lucky, a bid in the national championship game.

6 – Brigham Young (6-0)

I'm really hoping both they and Utah are unbeaten come late November. It could be an epic shootout.

7 – Texas Tech (6-0)

Sorry, but ... they still haven't beaten anyone, and I still don't believe in them.

8 – Oklahoma (5-1)

Nothing to be ashamed of here.

9 – Florida (5-1)

So much for LoSerU. That was ugly. Superman returns. I get the impression that the Ole Miss loss had more to do with Attention Deficit Disorder than anything the Rebels did.

10 – Georgia (5-1)

Do they crush Vandy, edge 'em, or fall out of the national championship race permanently?

11 – Missouri (5-1)

Remains to be seen just how high quality a loss Saturday's was.

12 – Southern California (4-1)

I think that Notre Dame game could be closer than many believe.

13 – Ohio State (6-1)

I have a feeling they will have recovered from SC (Southern California or Substantive Challenge) Swoon just in time to be devoured by the Nittany Lions.

14 – Louisiana State (4-1)

Lest we forget, this was actually a good game well into the second half, and a decent one approaching the fourth quarter.

15 – Ball State (7-0)

Say Fresno beats Boise ... TCU beats Utah ... Utah beats BYU ... a bunch of big boys have two losses ... and Ball State runs the table. See where I'm goin' here?

16 – Boise State (5-0)

Let's not get too excited: They've still got seven more games to win.

17 – Virginia Tech (5-1)

They've got to be even more furious over the ECU loss now, as the Pirates continue to stink up the joint.

18 – Vanderbilt (5-1)

The win over Auburn means much less now that the Tigers are in a freefall ... and a loss to Georgia will push the Commodores right back off the map.

19 – Wake Forest (4-1)

They and Virginia Tech are the teams to beat in the ACC.

20 – Florida State (4-1)

Bowden ain't gonna catch Paterno this year, that's for certain.

21 – Michigan State (6-1)

How much is a win over unbeaten (and now unranked here) Northwestern worth? Not much, from where I sit.

22 – North Carolina (5-1)

Credit to the Heels for hanging tough, but ... I saw that replay time and again: What a horrible call ... and what amazes me is that they scrutinized it and still made the wrong call. Notre Dame deserved a shot at the end zone.

23 – Pittsburgh (4-1)

They've got the inside track early on. The Backyard Brawl could be quite interesting this year.

24 – South Florida (5-1)

Will they pull a UF and wake up after a stunning loss?

25 – California (4-1)

Head-to-head is important, but not all-important: Yes, the Bears beat Michigan State, but ... that was at home, early on, and their loss to a Maryland team that got whupped by Middle Tennessee State is a lot uglier than Sparty's loss to them.

HAH! And everyone said Texas' win over Arkansas wasn't big. Arkansas just beat the 20th ranked team in the nation!
At the time it was a more than understandable view to take. The way Arkansas had played up to that point gave no indication how they'd do this week, at least not to the average fan. But that Texas team has impressed me now. Solid, solid win over Oklahoma!

Now that's how you're supposed play! Way to Gators!
In your honest opinions as a Gators man, what happened to that team, to create such a force last night? Was it Tebow? The coaching?

3 – Penn State (7-0)

It's a cinch Michigan can't hang with these guys. Can Ohio State or Sparty? Frankly, I'm not seein' it ... and I'd really appreciate it if the Lions would put OSU out of our collective misery.
Jealousy gets you nowhere. ;)

Let me just say this .... Penn St. has finally convinced me how good they are. I know Wisconsin is banged up some, but man.... PSU is whipping them badly 41-7 right now... in Madison! Personally, I don't think they will lose a game this year, and that includes when they come to Ohio St in a couple of weeks.

Congrats to the Nittany Lions staff for the job they are doing this year!!

That was a great game. I think Penn State is very good this year. I'm always hesitant to say they will win every game, but they certainly can.

The defense. And the running game. And great play from both lines. Demps and Rainey looked good, and Brandon Spikes played like a mad man. They all played like they needed to prove something...I hope it continues.

Great win by the Gators.

Eh, it's hard to get too fired up over that win over Auburn. Remember, Auburn scored only a field goal against Mississippi State. They won the game, but they only scored a field goal. Why they hung around in the Top 25 after that was kind of beyond me. Especially since they lost to LSU. A squeaker win over Missy State and a loss to LSU equates to a Top 25 ranking?

I expected Penn State to beat Wisky, but not by 41 points.

Neroon, I see you picked Wisconsin in the pick'em. You should have listened to me! :p

I'm kind of hoping Clark and Royster only play one or two drives vs. Michigan. I'd like to see Green and Devlin get some experience with the starting O-line and receivers, and both Clark and Royster seem to have been slightly dinged up post-Wisconsin and I'd like to see them rested.

Texas and Arkansas have a huge, huge rivalry going. It's big. It's almost as big as the OU/Texas rivalry, so anything can happen during the game. Everyone was a bit nervous that Arkansas might pull off a huge upset against Texas because -- well that usually happens. But they crushed them.

Christ, Mizzou's win and Penn State's win over Illinois looks pretty bad now that Illinois lost to Minnesota of all teams.

This year's Minnesota team is many times better than last years. They're 6-1 and bowl eligible, with a loss to OSU. Illinois is a solid team, but not spectacular by any means as this loss indicates. I didn't see most of the game, but Illinois offense wasn't clicking from what I saw.

This Penn State team reminds me so much of the 2005 squad, except I think Clark is better than Robinson and the three receivers are seniors and instead of freshmen. Royster and Hunt are about equal, but Stephfon Green as backup is an improvement. Our D this year is probably a little weaker than '05, but they've been improving. The O-line is better. Kevin Kelly is money now (he's only missed a 62 yarder, and has hit a 52 and 50) and everyone remembers his struggles in the 2006 Orange Bowl. I really, really, like this team.

Jealousy gets you nowhere. ;)

No, but the near-certainty that the Buckeyes will fold like a Bangkok hooker punched in the gut once they face a team with impressive speed will. :techman:

Illinois ... Florida ... LSU ... USC ... and, in all likelihood, Penn State in two weeks. Enjoy the renascence; it's likely to be brief. :p

[But they're better than Rutgers!]

I thought that is was a weird game and I think that they will avoid scheduling early games like that again on the opposite end of the country. Plus I think the offense was (and is) in a state of adjustment. They never look quite comfortable there.

... I think ... they will avoid scheduling early games like that again on the opposite end of the country.

That's not exactly the courageous course.

I admire a team like Fresno State, which was willing to come out and play Rutgers in Piscataway. I admired it even more a month-and-a-half ago, though, when most of us thought Rutgers had something resembling a major college football team.

Fresno State is famous for their "we'll play anyone, anywhere" attitude and I admire them for that.

Oregon has a bye this week which is good since maybe some of the walking wounded will heal up a bit. While they're 5-2 (with one PAC-10 loss) the rest of the schedule is tough: at Arizona State, at Cal, home against Arizona and Stanford and then finishing off at Oregon State. No way they run that table. Bowl season for me looks like it will be over before Christmas.

Bowl season for me looks like it will be over before Christmas.

Yeah. You may well be looking at 7-5.

Then, again, considering that my Knights are looking at 3-9, two seasons removed from 11-2, well ... no sympathy.

Oh, I forgot one point of interest about last night's Oregon game. Joe Montana attended it since his son, Nick Montana, is being recruited by the Ducks and was on the sideline for the game. It would be nice for the program if he committed and even nicer if he has some of his father's talent.

Sorry about the way Rutgers' season is going so far JM. It's tough when you know the program is better than the way they're playing.

Thanks for the sympathy, dude. It's apparent to the more perceptive friends of the program what needs to be done, but Schiano, who is notoriously and now ridiculously loyal to certain of his upperclassmen and staff, is reluctant to pull the trigger:
  • Teel must be benched for significant periods during the game, because "he gives us the best chance to win" is meaningless when you're 1-5 and your starting QB is a redshirt senior; he has no future, Greg ... sit his fearful, incompetent ass down
  • The one-back scheme must be abandoned: You have a perfectly wonderful potential lightning and thunder combination in Kordell Young and freshman Jourdan Brooks; go to a two-back pro set and make the defense actually respect the run possibility instead of being able to key on a single back
  • Offensive coordinator John McNulty should probably be fired, or at the very least informed that his leash has now shortened to the point of lynch mob length
While this is, ultimately, a demoralized 1-5 team, it clearly shouldn't be: They outplayed Fresno State, outhustled and outhit West Virginia and Cincinnati, and had the class not to run up the score against an overmatched Morgan State. It's rare you can say this and not sound like a delusional homer, but, frankly, they should be at least 3-3 ... and 5-1, while firmly esconced in the lower echelons of the Top Twenty-Five, isn't out of the question.

How long must we wait, Greg?

True but who has Minnesota played this year? No one. I think Indiana is their best opponent before Illi...so it's not a good gauge.
