Yes, indeed, that is good news. 
In many ways, he was the heart of the show. But they also had very little idea of what to do with him after the first season (I'll say his time in Japan was at least something, but really nothing after that). Maybe if his role was more of a mentor role, it'll work better.
Hiro was way too powerful so they lost him in Japan then eventually just removed his powers. No concept of what they were doing or where they were taking it
With that in mind, is this revival a vanity project that will only further damage the reputation of the show or do they actually have a plan?

It was kind of nice that Hiro became Ando's sidekick after he lost his power and I really liked it in the fourth season when Hiro kept trying to use his power to save others and filed more times than he succeeded. hiro, Noah, Claire, Pete and Sylar were IMO the heart of the series at least two of them will be in the miniseries.
This. I loved Hiro, but it was painfully obvious that he was one of the characters who was only meant to appear in Season 1 in original anthology series concept.
I can only hope that they acknowledge the passage of time and bring him back as something more like Future Hiro. That would be interesting at least.
Or at least have an episode where multiple versions of him come together (like the 5 doctors). The episode would of course be called "Hiros"

Both excellent news. And...with Hiro returning, it would be nice to see Ando as well.
Wasn't the Haitian taken out of play (Killed or depowered?). And that was his power, right, nullifying others' powers?
I can't wait to see the new character the Nigerian, whose special power is to magically make people's money disappear. But then that opens the door for another character, the UK Lottery.
