NBA Playoffs - 2009

Well the way Orlando played last night, especially Dwight Howard, the point may be moot.

Orlando has a pretty young, athletic team. I wonder how long the aging, depleted Celtics can hang around against another youthful team?

I bet they win tonight but ultimately fall in 6 games.

The Celtics came back with a vengeance. It may well be that the Magic will miss Courtney Lee more than we realize. OTOH, the Celtics have only Perkins to guard the middle, and he's not muich of a match for Howard.

Anyone see the Lakers / Rockets game last night? I'm curious as to what you thought about the exchange between Kobe and Artest.

Yao has another broken foot and it out for the season. Sadly, this is just going to keep happening. Somebody of his size and weight isn't built to handle 82+ games of basketball a year.

Did you miss my point purposely? The Lakers reached the Finals in a relatively weaker conference that year against a number of teams that the Lakers have traditionally had past success against. In other words, it wasn't that stellar of an achievement.
Huh? The Lakers went through one of the toughest set of teams ever in the playoffs last season. Last season the Western Conference was head and shoulders better than the east. All of the teams making the playoffs in the west had 50 win seasons. One team that didn't even make into the West playoffs (Golden State), even had 50 wins.

The Lakers went through all those 50 win teams in the playoffs WITHOUT two key front court players.

Some of the east teams who made it last season were at, or barely above, .500 (some may have been below .500 just like this season in the east). That is one of the reasons so many of the talking heads stupidly believed the Lakers would beat the Celts -- because they had beaten so much better competition than the Cs had beaten to get to the Finals.

You have an excuse for whining, you're a Cs fan, but try getting a clue before you do it.
In addition, the loss of Garnett and to a lesser extent, Powe, is more substantial to the Celtics as our roster isn't exactly deep in talent.
And who's fault is that? Thats like saying, 'we would be great if we had a better players'.

You know, the whole idea is to put together a team that has more than 4 or 5 good players. If you don't, guess what, yes... your team tends to struggle - especially against teams who do have more than 4 or 5 good players.

How in the name of Jerry West did the Lakers actually lose to a Houston Rockets team playing without Yao Ming? :wtf:

The Rox, like many teams suddenly forced to play without a key player, got a psychological "bump", and played way over their heads. The Lakers on the other hand, lost a bit of their edge after finding out Yao was out. It was sure disappointing, but not surprising.

I would have much preferred that Yao played. I think it would have helped the Lakers from a psychological standpoint.

But this is the second time the Rockets have had to do that, the first being how they played when McGrady was shut down for the season.

I was pulling for Orlando in that game. 3-1 woulda been a commanding lead. I'm not looking forward to a Boston-Cleveland Eastern Finals.

A young, athletic Cleveland team fresh off of (likely) 2 straight sweeps with plenty of rest, vs. an aging, injury depleted Celtics team coming off out 2 long, ground out series.

I think Orlando would be a better matchup from a casual fan's perspective.

I think Orlando is a better opponent from everyone's perspective. The Cavs whooped on the Celtics during the regular season, while the Magic actually gave Cleveland a run for their money.

My Mavs-fan girlfriend got me into basketball when I went over to the US at Xmas and can you imagine how disappointed I am that no cable channel in the UK shows NBA games?????

I have to wait for the highlights on youtube or watch the live scoreboard...Grrrrrrrrr....and it doesn't help that the Mavs are one game away from being left in the dust.

If your girlfriend is a Mavs fan, she is likely steaming at the refs for the way that last game ended with the no call on that shot?

The NBA site is reasonable for 3 minutes of highlights per game. They also have audio commentaries for the games freely available.

You can get a broadband pass for $30 or so - http://ilp.nba.com - which was pretty good value at the start of the play-offs (less now, I suppose).

The only actual live coverage in the UK is, I think, one game a week on Five. They have a weekly highlights package (NBA 360) too.

Yeah, if you're a Mavs fan it's probably for the best that you didn't see the end of their last game...
