National anthems that you like.

This thread is about national anthems of countries or territories that you like. It could be any anthem.

Let me start the with the old East German anthem, Ausferstanden Aus Ruinen which means Risen from the Ruins. This was the national anthem of the German Democratic Republic which existed from 1949 to 1990.

It is a very beautiful anthem on par with the Israeli anthem. It should have been the national anthem of reunited Germany if you ask me.

The Russian one is pretty. I like the German one, as well, because not only are the lyrics nice and peaceful and non-imperialistic, the melody is very agreeable.

Then, of course, there's God Save the Queen.

...and the Marseillaise.

I'm rather partial to the Star Spangled Banner, myself. Then again, I am an American. Outside my home country, I enjoy the short and poetic anthem of Japan (Kimigayo), the national anthem of India (Jana Gana Mana), and, of course, the bloody and revolutionary "La Marseillaise."

The French, La Marseillaise. Very stirring and memorable and not at all hard to sing.

Of course I'm partial to my own country's, The Star Spangled Banner, but God DAMN, that sucker is hard to sing.

I can't remember the tune to save my life but I do remember when Chile played Italy in the 1998 world cup, Ivan Zamorano sang his balls off and I just thought... that was impressive shit.

My favorite unofficial national anthem

There are many great national anthems. In fact, I probably liked most of those that I've heard. I'm mostly judging by melody, though, as often the lyrics are a bit... weird.

Two of my favourites are the Romanian one and Het Wilhelmus, the Dutch national anthem.

I think the Romanian anthem is usually not sung, just played. I really love the melody.

I've listened to this so often I could probably sing along. I like Dutch as a language, it's powerful, yet kind of cute.

An honourable mention to the Israeli national anthem which I only took note of recently. Someone played it at a party I was at. It has a certain power ballad feeling to it.

On a side note how many naional anthems have been written either words and/or music by someone of a different nationality?

I like the English one. I wish we'd change ours in America, find something easier to sing and not able our flag.

One of the MPs in our Parliament is trying (yet again) to have a slight change made in the lyrics for "O Canada." I have no objection to the song being less sexist (changing "all thy sons" to "all of us"), but I really wish they'd get rid of "God keep our land". If we're at the point of prayer to keep our country free, we're in so much trouble that prayer isn't going to help.

Advance Australia Fair was written by a Brit, in the late 18th centurey, before Australia was even a country (The six colonies federated on 1 January 1901 to form the Comonwealth of Australia). The original versian was five or six verses, most of which were very pro-British. The music was adapted from elsewhere, I think. It didn't become our national anthem until a two-verse version (dropping much of the sexist and pro-British language*) in a public vote in 1986, when it beat out Waltzing Matilda, a song about an unemployed itinerant sheep theif who commits suicide by drowning to evade the law.

*But hey, we kept the word "girt".

The words for Finnish national anthem were written down when Finland was still part of the Russian Empire. So technically it was written by a Russian. The original language was Swedish, though. The tune was composed by Pacius, who was originally German, but later moved to Finland.

Swedish anthem, Metal version

If you lived in the 1970s in the US, like me, you might remember the "Flag Evolution" US National Anthem television sign-off/on (evidently produced by Saxton Graphics Associates in 1971):

I've no idea what arrangement this is of the music. It clearly has some unique embellishments, including an intro (fanfare), partial repetition, and church hymn-style "amen" ending, but I think it's basically very good, very dignified. It's one of my favorite versions.

The slide show is fantastic.

The British national anthem really sucks if you're not a monarchist. I'd prefer "Jerusalem" or "Land of Hope and Glory".

The words to the Spanish national anthem are a blast and easy to learn. :shifty:

Well, it's one of Beethoven's best works. And the words are by Friedrich Schiller (although I'm not sure the EU anthem also has the words). You can't go wrong with that. ;)
