Naming practices in Trekverse

Laura Cynthia Chambers

Vice Admiral
Admiral
What first names(akes) are popular? Lots of little Jameses, Kirks, etc? Are alien first names popular with people, too?

Do people take on new last names when they settle a planet, ones which reflect their jobs? Do we have somebody surnamed, "Warpman" or "Transporter", or someone born on a ship named "Enterpriseson/Priseson"?

Could be, could be.

There was a DSC episode with a human named T'Shen Kovil. He could have a Vulcan relative, or perhaps his parents named him after a Vulcan they knew (or simply liked the name).

The Kzinti do.

In TAS' "The Slaver Weapon" the Kzin commander is called "Chuft Captain". His rank is part of his name, as per standard Kzinti naming conventions.

Define "American name". Garcia and Rodriguez are the sixth and ninth most-common last names in USA. So if by "American" you mean WASP names from England, that's not really true. Lots of German sounding names in my home area, including my own name.

Personally, I make a concerted effort to give a decent mix of names in my fiction writing. Here's the list of the humans in the crew on the ship in my latest fiction stories:

Don't worry, I do not intend on writing every single character into my stories. I just wanted a list handy in case I need to mention the night-shift maintenance tech that bumps into the captain when he's going for a midnight snack.

When I'm creating characters for any of my stories I usually tend to use family names, surnames anyway. I have a list of surnames that crop up on my mum's side of the family, It's quite a long list and I've not used them all, but I might have to use some in the Discovery fic I'm working on.

I won't list them all but these are some of my favourites or that I want to use: (for humans if it's Star Trek)

Bloxell
Bowditch
Roser
Pink
Harding
Gatland
Saxbee
Sawyer
Sillick
Hitchcock
Tuckney
Verral
Wraight
Holland
Holmes
Huggett
Knight
Legge
Luff
Lyon
Marchant
Noble

I've used my own surname, which is Molloy but it's from my dads side, once or twice.

I imagine though there are some quite unique names in the 23/24 century's. I guess it depends on the character. But I quite like the name Amaranthea, Amara for short, I don't know if it's a particularly spacey name, but I've used it before in a Star Wars type RP.

Ages ago I found a LOTR name generator where you put yours or another name in and it gave you an elven name. But I’m pretty sure I also found one for Star Trek. That would be a good resource though if you’re struggling to come up with a Star Trek related name or one that would fit.

What you do with such a thing is load in actual Star Trek names and see what it spits out in return. Could be interesting.

I never thought of that, I’ll have to try that. I’ll have a look for it when I get home and have a go. It could be interesting though.
