Names you could have got.

If I were a boy then Spencer Ashley-Ryan was the choice.

Other choices for female names were

Danika Natalie-Valerie-Josephine
Aspen
Brianna
Alyssa Melodia-Verity-Victoire
Sophie Raquel-Adrienne-Rianne
Olivia Marie-Bernadette-Lisbeth

Or
Mariah Victoire-Ashlee-Lynn, which they later gave to my littlest sister.

I was Mairiee sine my mom thought Mary was too common of a spelling, and to this day no one pronounces it right, they over complicate it all of the time.

There are twenty five different names there!

My mother told me that I was almost named Christopher. I could have lived with that, though I like the name I ended up with — Scot with one T. The single-T spelling gives it distinction.

BTW, my parents were really on an Anglophile kick when they named my brother Derek Jonathan. I guess we’re both lucky one of us didn’t end up a Nigel, Jeremy, Julian, Colin or Ian.

. . .I freaking HATE my name. I was the only Hillary in my entire school, until I was a Junior in high school. And no one EVER spelled my name right; the usual spelling is one L. I think only Mrs. Clinton and I use two. My Mom, my sisters, my husband, etc don't call me "Hillary"--it's always Hill. Only my Dad calls me by my full name---because he's a jerk.

I don't think I look like a "Jackie" but I wonder if I would've been happier if I didn't have such a snotty-sounding name.
I don’t think “Hillary” sounds that bad, whether it’s spelled with one or two L’s. But there’s no accounting for personal taste. My mother (whose first name is Alice) has always hated her middle name, Natalie. I think Natalie sounds pretty.

(Insert tacky Natalie Wood joke here.)

I know. My mom comes from French aristocracy, way back in the line, all of us girls have three middle names.

My mom's crazy, and I don't even remember my sisters full names because of it.

My name was supposed to be Rick. Just Rick; not Richard. But, my mom's "best friend" - who was pregnant at the same time - had her baby boy 8 days before I was born and named HIM Rick, apparently thinking it would be "neat" to have both babies with the same name. My mom did not agree, so my parents added the Der to the Rick and came up with my name (which, apparently, did have some sort of family history.)

Believe it or not, the same woman did the exact same thing 3 years later when she had her second baby boy 10 days before my brother was born.

If I'd been a girl I was going to be named Tammy. I'm so glad I wasn't a girl. Every Tammy I've ever known (personally) in life has been a ... shall we say, not my favorite person. With no offense intended toward anyone on TBBS who might have that name. :mallory:

I could have been a Christy or a Melanie, but my parents had friends whose two daughters close to my age had those names.

If I'd been a boy, I would have been Shawn - not at all to my taste. Very happy being Angela.

At first my father didn't like the idea of me being named after him, so my mother planned on calling me Stephen; then my father relented, so I'm Richard. My first brother then got to be Stephen.

I'm the exact opposite. My mom wanted to name me Randolph Scott, but my dad and his massive ego insisted that I be named after him so Randolph became my middle name. Sadly, mom didn't have the guts to say no to him.

My parents knew well ahead of time what they wanted my name to be. Being the first born I got the one name they both loved, Michelle. I did get to witness the decision making process for my little sisters though, which was interesting. With one of them, they had finally agreed on a name from the baby name book, but forgot it on the way to the hospital and couldn't remember what it was, so they named her Ashley instead. With the next two, my dad inexplicably become obsessed with the name Jennifer, which was almost used but changed at the last minute. With the youngest sister I actually chose her name. I was 10 at the time and we were all sitting in my parents' bed reading through names and none of them sounded right. Finally I said, "hey, how about Alexis? We could call her Lexi for short!" and everyone thought it was perfect. At that time Alexis was not yet a popular name, but I had known one person who had it and I thought it sounded nice.

If any of us had turned out to be a boy we would have been named James, a family name. By the time the last daughter was born my parents realized it wasn't going to happen so they gave her the middle name of James.

Haha, we didn't have middle names at all.

My father wanted me to be Geoffrey, with the old English pronunciation but my mother wanted it to be Jeffrey but my father would not budge. So she canned that name and named me after her cousin and the archangel. To appease my father she gave me his first name as my middle name.

If I'd been a boy, I would have been either Kevin or Scott (my dad's middle name), with the middle name Irwin (his dad's name).

I think Judith Anne was the only name my mom ever wanted to give me, but Carol was next on her list. I probably would have ended up with Carly as a nickname, because Mom loves Carly Simon!

I'd suggest that people tread a little cautiously, lest they offend someone with their comments about certain names!
Personally I've got nothing against Carmen. It's a wonderful name if one happens to be a dark Latina vixen career criminal with a penchant for red fedoras, but I'm a round-faced, pink-cheeked, pale half-Indian...SO not suited to me. I'm glad they didn't go with my dad's choice.

I'm curious, does anyone feel particularly unsuited to their name? I'm definitely a Hannah, it suits me perfectly. My little sister, on the other hand, never goes by her real name, not even among family.

I go by Lilly since Lillian is my first middle name. Mairiee, Mary, is far too annoying to watch teachers pronounce it May-ree *

My name is my name, and it's fine, but when I really think about it it doesn't make a lot of sense.

I could never imagine looking at a newborn baby and thinking, "You look like a Roger."

No idea. I don't think my parents had alternate names. I honestly think they just pulled mine out of their ass.
So your name is Turd? :)

Reminds me of the old joke about how a Native American tribe named their children . . .

If I would have been a girl, my name would have been Kelly Lee.
That name would work just as well for a boy, actually.

Do you mean the old English spelling? I thought Jeffrey and Geoffrey were pronounced the same.

English spelling and pronunciation. I've always been told and heard that Jeffrey is pronounced like it is spelled and Geoffrey is pronounced like Joffrey.

Haha, we didn't have middle names at all.

That sounds amazing. :)

Middle names are annoying when you have to remember all three of them, and your last names are hyphenated as well.

Dear wife has 5 names... as with many in predominantly Catholic countries..(Brazil included) when she took my name..it was added to her maiden name...which was a combination of both her parent's names...

When I say her entire name, it kind of sounds like Portuguese royality..
