Names you could have got.

My maternal grandfather wanted my parents to name me Margaret (so he could call me Peggy). I am so grateful!! that my parents declined (mom didn't want a Peggy). The compromise: my middle name is Margaret and nobody calls me Peggy. Amen.

When we went to name our first son, I wanted to name him Ian Malcolm. I always loved the name from Jurassic Park, but my wife objected and we named him Ian Riley. However I do get a sweet sense of satisfaction when my two and half year old is running away and I yell "Ian Freeze."

I'm not sure how serious she was about it, but my mom did kind of like the name Aldo. Which is why I like to use it as an online handle now.

That's a sort of family name in my husband's family. His grandmother is named Margaret but goes by Peggy, he has an aunt named Margaret who actually goes by that name, and my brother-in-law and his wife have considered the name if they ever have a daughter. They'd probably name a daughter Margaret but have her go by Maggie, which I think is really sweet. Then again I'm a sucker for traditions.

My mother wanted to name me Jason, but my father hated it and they settled on Matthew. However, mum might well win in the long run, because I love the name Jason and it's on the short list for any son of mine. Though I bet my wife will hate it too.

It's a family name for my lot, too. :) My maternal family, anyway. Margaret is my maternal grandmother's name and my mother's second.

:) Its a great name! One of the most awesome things about it is that there are so many nicknames, so the person who has the name(or there parents) can choose a name that fits their personality.

Of course, my first name pales in comparison to my middle name. I absolutely loath it! :klingon: Always have. It was the name of my 5th great-grandfather. I suppose it was an alright name in the 1790s, but not so much for the late 20th century.

It's funny, I also have a rather ... "archaic" middle name that I absolutely hated when I was a kid. But, it's grown on me. And, I came to appreciate the "tradition" of it as I got older. I'm the 7th generation where the oldest son of the oldest son got this as a middle name, and 8 generations ago, it was the family patriarch's first name. I kinda dig that. :)

That would be more acceptable, but it's not the case for me. Just a one-off shout-out to a relatively famous ancestor.

Rickder? That's pretty cool. :D

smartass ....
My mother calls me that more than she calls me by my real name. :rommie:

Rickder...didn't they name the earthquake magnitude scale after you? (And yes, I know it's Richter.

My name is Matthew, and I have no idea what I would have been named if I was a girl or other options for a boy name. I think my Dad came up with most of the ideas, and he's not around anymore, so I don't think I'll ever find that out.

Had I been a boy, my mum would have named me Giuseppe (Joseph), which sounds much better in English than it does in Italian... :shifty:

There was a short lived debate in my family as they were considering calling me Carlotta.
With all due respect to all the Carlotta in the world, I am -so- thankful I didn't end up with that name. :vulcan:

As it is, I now bear the names of three Queens. :D
