Name your GURU!!!

We all hope the movie will turn out great...but...

If you had the power to hire anyone to be the new franchise head, like Roddenberry-Bennett-Berman were, who would you hire and why?

Good question. I'm one of those who would have liked to see JMS' spin on the franchise. Many fans would have freaked out because of his ideas. But I want my Star Trek to be bold and new. ;)

I'm also a die-hard RDM bootlicker (still haven't received the t-shirt ), so having him as the showrunner wouldn't hurt the franchise either.

I agree with you on both!!! Two others I would have gotten, and they never would have, would have been JAMES CAMERON or Ridley Scott.

I would hire some of the authors of the Star Trek books, people like Greg Cox, Michael Jan Friedman, Christie Golden and some others as well. They write good stories and have an understanding and love for the characters and for Star Trek as a concept.

I would also have someone who could keep an eye on the fans and their opinions. I have a feeling that some of the loss of popularity which Star Trek has suffeder from the recent years is because of some really bad decisions by the former producers of the show, decisions which annoyed many loyal fans. Therefoe I do find it important to communicate with the fans who the show is depending of when it comes to success or not. OK, you can't please them all but at least most of them.

I've always been a fan of Peter Jackson's films. I like that he has the talent to boil the geek movies (Lotr especially) down to the essentials without dumbing down the material.

JMS is great for characterization -- his characters seem more real than many of the later Trek characters.

I would say Frank Herbert, but he's dead, and I don't do necromancy. But I think Trek needs someone like him -- someone with a big sweeping vision of what the future will be like and is more interested in telling a great sci-fi story than pandering to the latest TV and film trends. Trek will never be great again if it's following the trend of the week.

A fly walking across the screen of a TV showing an original episode knows more about ST than B&B do.

Mmh. Russel T Davies. I love what he's doing as show runner for Doctor Who and I believe he could lead Trek into a very different direction. It would be extremely interesting to see that.
On the other hand it would probably result in a mass nervous breakdown for large parts of the fan base...

I'm actually very happy with Paramount's choice - J.J. Abrams. If J.J. were doing a series and surrounded himself with the talented writers and producers he's worked with (Damon Lindelof, Carlton Cuse, along with former Buffy/Angel writers Drew Goddard, David Fury), I think the series would be amazing.

I'm a huge Joss Whedon fan but I'm not sure Trek is the right franchise for him. Still, I'd love to at least see an episode penned by him. Same goes for a lot of the writing staff from his projects (Tim Minear, Jeff Bell, the previously-mentioned Drew Goddard and David Fury, etc.).

Ron Moore has done an amazing job with the new BSG, and he's already got a ton of Trek experience, so it might be good to finally give him the keys to the franchise (without having to worry about Rick Berman's approval). On the other hand, maybe he shouldn't go back to Trek simply because he's done it already.

I can't help but wonder what the literary folks would do with on-screen Trek. Would the amazing Pocket authors and editors like Marco Palmieri, Christopher Bennett, KRAD, David Mack, and the Martin/Mangels duo deliver greatness? The Reeves-Stevens managed to join the ENT writing staff.

Me! Because I think it should be done My way!

Okay, now that my expected response is out of the way...

I have a laundry list of people I would rather have running the franchise:

Steven Spielberg: Simply because he is a fantastic movie maker, and I don't see Paramount having a problem paying him. They did just buy his company after all, and it gave us a great version of War of the Worlds and Transformers.

James Cameron: Another phenomenal movie maker (Terminator I and II, Aliens, Titanic) that, again, Paramount should lavish money on to reinvigorate the series.

Peter Jackson: I don't care what anybody says, I liked King Kong, and I know most of you liked the LotR trilogy, so whichever way we come at it from, we all know Jackson is good at sweeping epics. Why not let him do a Trek one?

David Twohy: Because I love the visuals in his movies. (The eclipse scene in Pitch Black is one of the best visuals ever!)

As for TV...

Ronald D. Moore: Because he's right, because he's good, and because he understands the concepts of up and down in space, and he should be turned loose on Trek as soon as BSG ends.

Ron Moore, Peter Alan Fields, Rene Echevarria, Robert Hewitt Wolfe and Ira Steven Behr.
The Reeves-Stevens managed to join the ENT writing staff.

And their episodes had unusual depth - I guess writing novels makes you good at world-building. So I'd add them to my list.

I agree. I'd love to see some Trek episodes written by those authors.

Rather than repeat any of the choices above, let me just mention Jonathan Frakes and David E. Kelley.

Umm...wow...yes!! I would love D E KELLY. Especially if they did a show that explored the legal aspects of the 24th century!!! Good pick..I bow to your choice..most unique so far!!!

Wrong.

I'd pick Abrams at this point, based on what seems to be going on with the new movie - it's far better than I would have hoped two years ago. Other than that...Joss Whedon, because I'd rather watch something Whedon does than just about any other skiffy stuff out there.
