A friend gave me Blish's Star Trek 4; shortly after that I found and devoured Spock Must Die! This was probably 1971 or '72. Alas, I don't still have those copies. I tried to strengthen the corners of the covers that had gotten a little bent, using common Scotch tape, not realizing what a sticky mess they would become very quickly. What can I say -- I was young. I've since replaced them.
The Kobayashi Maru by Julia Ecklar, I believe. That or Final Frontier by Diane Carey.
The first Star trek book I ever read was Star Trek 1 by James Blish and the first novel was Spock Must Die by James Blish. I got that and all the TV show novelizations from someone who was clearing out some old books.
I found that one to be awful. It just had a lot of mischaracterizations and the plot was way too slilly to be even funny.

I was born between the two parts of "Best Of Both Worlds", first run. How's that for younger than your scars?

The Escape by Dean Wesley Smith and Kristine Kathryn Rusch. And yes, it's still on the shelf, though I have no desire to read it again anytime soon.
My exposure to Trek as a whole was Voyager, "Basics, Part II". I have a feeling my second book was the novelization of "Flashback", but I also remember knowing who Kirk and Spock and Sulu were as I read it, so it must have been a while after the first one. In my memory, one night I was watching "Basics" and the next night I knew the whole universe. Pretty sure it didn't actually work that way.

In terms of the subject of this thread, I'd have to say that (even though I'd already read and bought some Star Trek novels by then) it was Peter David's run on Star Trek for DC Comics that really got me into hardcore fandom.
The first of those comics I bought was the excellent "The Trial of James T. Kirk," and I was soon going into Book Fair (and elsewhere) in Winnipeg to get as many back issues from every publisher as I could get my hands on...
I still own all those back issues, of course, but I look forward to getting the ST Comics DVD-ROM so I can more easily relive those memories.

My first Trek book was the DS9 title Antimatter by John Vornholt. I loved it. My brother and I went to WHSmith with Christmas book tokens our aunties had sent and we stood there for hours choosing which book we wanted to get. I picked Antimatter because it had a lot of Dax in it, and even though I hadn't seen much DS9 at this point I'd decided I liked her. We would both sit in the front room reading our Star Trek books and not talking to each other, except to ask how much the other had read.
I think there were two Trek books in my school library, and there were two people in the school who liked Trek (or rather, two people who admitted it), so if either of the books weren't there on any given day and it wasn't me who'd taken them out I knew my friend had them One of them was the makeup book by Michael Westmore. I think I read that book about ten times
