Name the first ST novel you read

The thing about The Captains' Honor is that it was basically an extended Patrick Stewart in-joke. The "Magna Roman" captain was named for and based on the character Stewart played in I, Claudius. So it was basically pitting two Stewart characters opposite each other.

Having seen the episode a couple of weeks ago, I did think of a better sequel idea....

Must pitch it someday.

But not today.

A friend gave me Blish's Star Trek 4; shortly after that I found and devoured Spock Must Die! This was probably 1971 or '72. Alas, I don't still have those copies. I tried to strengthen the corners of the covers that had gotten a little bent, using common Scotch tape, not realizing what a sticky mess they would become very quickly. What can I say -- I was young. I've since replaced them.

I did that, too.

The first Star trek book I ever read was Star Trek 1 by James Blish and the first novel was Spock Must Die by James Blish. I got that and all the TV show novelizations from someone who was clearing out some old books.

I got this book when it came out. It was my first purchase of a Trek novel. I had to become a security guard again at age 30 when a business I tried to start didn't get off the ground.

As you can probably guess, I loved it and this is the main reason why I dislike the plot of the current Trek movie. It simply does not stand up to the quality of this book!

Then I found a used bookstore with all the old Blish adaptations and this kept me company on many quiet nights as a security guard, not to mention the other 30 original Trek novels that existed by that time, but I did not read them all. I guess I got in about half of them before I found a better paying job.

So... 25 years.

I found that one to be awful. It just had a lot of mischaracterizations and the plot was way too slilly to be even funny.

Yeah, they are included, have them myself.
Got a box through the mail with a FJ tech manual and a whole lot of novels,

James

I remember reading the first...five I think it was...Blish collections, as a kid, while waiting for my parents in divorce court. Either four or five of them.

I, Q...Or was it Q-Squared? I read both in the same day, I can't seem to remember in what order. Either way, what a beautiful day that was.

The Log books are the animated series right?
If anybody has them or the James Blish series of books, they all are included!
Do any of you have any novels that arc into any of the series?
Damn, can't get to my books because I braced my left leg, actually my sister did and I can't find a novel to ask if anyone's read it.
Is there a series of novels titled Star Trek New Frontier?
I've got one and I think that's the title of it.

James

The Escape by Dean Wesley Smith and Kristine Kathryn Rusch. And yes, it's still on the shelf, though I have no desire to read it again anytime soon.

My exposure to Trek as a whole was Voyager, "Basics, Part II". I have a feeling my second book was the novelization of "Flashback", but I also remember knowing who Kirk and Spock and Sulu were as I read it, so it must have been a while after the first one. In my memory, one night I was watching "Basics" and the next night I knew the whole universe. Pretty sure it didn't actually work that way. :)

Back when Book Fair was closer to that Royal Bank across from Portage Place, and even earlier it used to be on the corner of Donald and Portage across from Eaton's (gone now too!) I used to get DC first run (the 1982-1988 run) there . I started with issue #33 when it came out in August 1986, then went through their bins with beaten up back issues (which weren't really that old then of course!) and every Saturday I'd get 2 or 3 issues for 25 cents each then play arcade games at Saratoga Amusements just down the street. Ahhh...memories!
In terms of the subject of this thread, I'd have to say that (even though I'd already read and bought some Star Trek novels by then) it was Peter David's run on Star Trek for DC Comics that really got me into hardcore fandom.

The first of those comics I bought was the excellent "The Trial of James T. Kirk," and I was soon going into Book Fair (and elsewhere) in Winnipeg to get as many back issues from every publisher as I could get my hands on...

I still own all those back issues, of course, but I look forward to getting the ST Comics DVD-ROM so I can more easily relive those memories. :)

Well, I've managed not to read pretty much any of the ones you've all read, except A Stitch in Time!

My first Trek book was the DS9 title Antimatter by John Vornholt. I loved it. My brother and I went to WHSmith with Christmas book tokens our aunties had sent and we stood there for hours choosing which book we wanted to get. I picked Antimatter because it had a lot of Dax in it, and even though I hadn't seen much DS9 at this point I'd decided I liked her. We would both sit in the front room reading our Star Trek books and not talking to each other, except to ask how much the other had read.

I think there were two Trek books in my school library, and there were two people in the school who liked Trek (or rather, two people who admitted it), so if either of the books weren't there on any given day and it wasn't me who'd taken them out I knew my friend had them :) One of them was the makeup book by Michael Westmore. I think I read that book about ten times :guffaw:
