Mischief Makers! One of the best platformers ever made that no one knows about. I'm just going to wait until your guess is confirmed before posting a screenshot.

I played it, was quite fun actually.

But I could have sworn the main character was a girl?

Yeah, the main character is Marina, but you get to play as Teran (the guy in the screenshot) for 2-3 levels halfway through the game. I think that was intended to trip people up.
