Name that Game

I've never actually played the game, but the graphics are very distinctive.

Anyway, here's a game that I've been playing rather religiously over the past few days. Should prove a little challenging.

Well obviously that's an NES game in an emulator with maybe HQ2X scaling enabled and a slightly-off crop job. Looks like one row of grey pixels left on top that are probably the bottom part of the emulator's menu, which would leave 4 missing black rows on the bottom.

But it's not a game I ever played :(

So very, very close. You're right about the crappy crop job with one row of pixels left over from the menu and it is an NES game, but I'm using the HQ4X filter. Better luck next time.

You're pretty sneaky with the image name. That's no Shining Force game I've ever played. :p

It hasn't happened yet, but I'm going to catch someone with that eventually. I'm a patient man.

Here's a new screenshot with actual gameplay footage and a shiny new filter.

Fire 'n Ice.

Not sure how I eventually made the connection to Solomon's Key, but once I did and looked that game up I realized I was slightly off, so I figured (maybe it's the sequel!) and that's how I came to this conclusion :)

Yup, that's Fire 'n Ice. If you hadn't figured it out I was going to say that this game is a sequel to a popular NES puzzle game and post a screenshot for Solomon's Key.

Well, I did say maybe. Anyway, the screenshot is at 2x NES resolution, 512x448 if it was cropped perfectly, which would correspond to HQ2X. HQ4X would give you 1024x896. So if it's HQ4X then it got resized again... If you're doing that in the emulator then it seems kind of pointless. If the resize was for the benefit of posting a screenshot, that makes sense but at that point HQ2X and HQ4X aren't going to look any different :)

All right gents, I'm heading to bed but you guys can expect a picture from me tomorrow in the evening :)

Edit: All right, had time to grab a picture that I hope is fairly obscure:

I'm bumping this because I want people to see it does in fact have a picture in it now (initially I edited my post but I realized that won't let anyone know it has new content).

Well that's obviously an adventure game, but I don't have much experience with the genre.

Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders?

Nah, that's obviously a game running on Sierra's AGI engine. Based on the art style, I'm going to guess The Black Cauldron?

I was hoping to get a few more posts out of you guys before you all nailed it.

Yep, that is indeed The Black Cauldron, a game I once played but didn't get very far.

Damn, that was the first game in about 30 pages that I actually knew. Played it through several times - I liked the simplified interface as a kid.

Timby got the answer correct yesterday, I'll give him another day or two to come up with a new one. If not I'm going to go ahead and post another picture :)
