Name 3 countries you'd consider inviting to join the United States.

Re: Name 3 countries you'd consider inviting to join the United States

Not 'countries', of course, but the USA could definitely use a 51st state. And that state would, of course, be Washington DC.

(It's no joke that DC's license plates have 'Taxation Without Representation' on them, because in their case, it's TRUE. DC deserves to be a state; it's unconscionable that it isn't one.)

What about Puerto Rico? We might as will make them a state.

Only if they want it.

DC's residents overwhelmingly want DC to be a state, everyone knows that. But does Puerto Rico want the same thing for themselves? We really don't know.

I thought Atlantis was the Greek-Turkish island nation of Cyprus?
I don't recall any theories of Cyprus being Atlantis (what with it not sinking and all). I've seen theories of Santorini (Thera in ancient times) due to half of it sinking after a volcanic eruption.

^ That document can be amended, you know...

srsly, yes, I am well aware that DC's status as a district is outlined in the Constitution. But it shouldn't have to be that way. The Constitution can be changed. Prior wrongs can be made right.

DC can, and should, be given the statehood that it bloody well DESERVES. The only reason it was ever anything other than a state in the first place is the Pennsylvania Mutiny, and that was over 300 years ago!

I think you mean over 200 years ago, the USA didn't exist 300 years ago.

Re: Name 3 countries you'd consider inviting to join the United States

^ I should have said 'almost'. :p (Poor fact checking on my part. The Pennsylvania Mutiny took place in 1783.)

France, Germany, Belgium.

You deal with them, we're sick of them.

Actually Germany and Belgium are lovely places, full of great people. It's just the politicans.

Re: Name 3 countries you'd consider inviting to join the United States

I'm sure it would. The only problem is, Maryland doesn't want DC back; therefore, making DC an actual state would seem to be the only viable option.
With the prior retrocession, Congress transferred a third of Washington DC to Virginia in September of 1846. It was six months later before Virginia accepted it. Maryland would not actually be getting all of DC, just the residential areas.

The remaining parts of DC (much smaller) directly involved with the operation of the federal government would remain outside of any state, as it should be.

Besides, converting a medium size city into a little teeny tiny state makes no sense.

You're right about Santorini that my mistake.

No, that's not necessary either. There's no logical reason for it.

You'll be most surprised when they invent the intravenous Internet. Works wonders. :borg:

Isn't that true of a great many places..

Which parts are the remaining parts? I think you're underestimating how much residential space there is spread throughout (and likewise, how many government buildings). What about embassies. Should they be part of the federal district or the state the surrounds it? I understand that Congress and the White House would be part of the district. What about Pennsylvania Avenue?

Re: Name 3 countries you'd consider inviting to join the United States

Philipines
Puerto Rico
The GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council)

~~~~~~The GCC, in effect, already is a "Country" in many substantive ways, made up of:
Saudi (Oil, Baby)
Kuwait
Bahrain (Our Fifth Fleet is already here)
Qatar (Third Highest Natural Gas Reserves This Side Of Titan)
Oman (they are like the "Switzerland" of the Middle East re: Diplomacy
The United Arab Emirates.
