Name 3 countries you'd consider inviting to join the United States.

Re: Name 3 countries you'd consider inviting to join the United States

Why has nobody mentioned Atlantis?

Re: Name 3 countries you'd consider inviting to join the United States

Liberia
Philippines
Australia

More realistically (although not even close to realistic):
Canada
Mexico
Cuba

Re: Name 3 countries you'd consider inviting to join the United States

Not 'countries', of course, but the USA could definitely use a 51st state. And that state would, of course, be Washington DC.

(It's no joke that DC's license plates have 'Taxation Without Representation' on them, because in their case, it's TRUE. DC deserves to be a state; it's unconscionable that it isn't one.)

Re: Name 3 countries you'd consider inviting to join the United States

I think all US territories should be able to vote, but I recognize it's not the simplest thing in the world with the way our structure of government works (although, certainly, Puerto Rico should be a State and DC should have all the rights and powers of states). But that's a separate issue from this nonsense mindgame.

Re: Name 3 countries you'd consider inviting to join the United States

DC shouldn't simply have the rights and powers OF states - it should BE a state. There's absolutely no reason not to have it be one.

Except its status is specified in a document somewhere.

Re: Name 3 countries you'd consider inviting to join the United States

^ That document can be amended, you know...

srsly, yes, I am well aware that DC's status as a district is outlined in the Constitution. But it shouldn't have to be that way. The Constitution can be changed. Prior wrongs can be made right.

DC can, and should, be given the statehood that it bloody well DESERVES. The only reason it was ever anything other than a state in the first place is the Pennsylvania Mutiny, and that was over 300 years ago!

:D

Re: Name 3 countries you'd consider inviting to join the United States

Thank you to all who said "Canada", but I believe you might find that most of us probably prefer to remain an independent nation. :)

Canada- because young people shouldn't need a passport to take advantage of Canada's lower drinking age.

Just for the record, drinking age is set provincially, not federally. (Although, yes, all provinces currently have it lower than America's 21.) But if we joined your country, your drinking age would then apply to us anyway...

Why would Canada, or any other first-world-country want to become part of the U.S.?!

Because of those things the USA that those first world countries don't have.

So they can enjoy the following

<snip>
Politicans who shut down the Government when they don't get their way

To be fair... we already have this one.

Why would Canada, or any other first-world-country want to become part of the U.S.?!

One actual benefit would be access to the US market, and all the various products that are available there that are never made available here, since our market is only 1/10th the size, and so it's not financially worth it to the companies. Like, for example... Peanut Butter Oreos. :) But in all honesty, I don't think that's a big enough benefit to justify giving up universal health care! ;)

(And apologies for possibly taking too seriously what is essentially a joke thread...)

Switzerland, they have one of the highest gun ownership rates in the world, they'll fit right in.

Mexico, half of their population is up here anyway and it not like we'd have to officially remove the border.

China, second wealthiest country on Earth (America's number one), throw all the commies out of government and end the bullshit that they own Taiwan.

Combined GDP 37.7 billion dollars.

Why has nobody mentioned Atlantis?
You mean from Stargate? It would be cool to have part of the United States in the Pegasus Galaxy.

It's no joke that DC's license plates have 'Taxation Without Representation' on them
Incorporating DC's residential areas into Maryland's Montgomery and Prince George's counties would fix that easy.

How exactly does a country play strip poker?
Just ask Vladimir Putin. He's got lots of topless photos of himself online, and I shudder to think about what might turn up with the 'safe search' off.

Germany- because their Star Trek novel covers rock.

Canada- because young people shouldn't need a passport to take advantage of Canada's lower drinking age.

Great Britain- so we can finally put all of this region-specific DVD nonsense behind us, once and for all.
Just lobby your politicians to get rid of the passport requirement. We hate it, too. But keep in mind that the drinking age isn't the same all over the country; it's the provinces that make those rules.

Why would Canada, or any other first-world-country want to become part of the U.S.?!
Very good question. I can't think of a single reason why I'd want to, unless some major changes were made there.

I'm sure it would. The only problem is, Maryland doesn't want DC back; therefore, making DC an actual state would seem to be the only viable option.

Saudi Arabia, Israel and Vatican City.
