Since Discovery now has detachable nacelles, could they not have just detached them, slipped out of the Orion's space tentacles grasp, quickly reattached them and skedaddled on out of there?

Was there a reason why this couldn’t have just been posted in the episode’s thread?

Edit: Never mind.

Mind you, it is both what the detachable saucer of the Enterprise-D and the multi-vector assault mode on the USS Prometheus could have accomplished 800 years earlier if they wanted to. If they can't do that now when they are already detached, the designers of these new starship vanity features get the same treatment from me as those who design modern web sites. It makes no sense, but they push it anyway. And Starfleet is buying it.

I have one better tactic though: Jump with the nacelles and the tentacles into a place the adversary will find themselves in trouble, then detach, slip out, reattach, jump to where you want to go. And Discovery could do almost as advanced battle acrobatics with the spore jumping in Season 1.

Ah....all these naughty tentacles.......now the ship is nicknamed the USS Kirk..... Orion style!!!

Y'all don't get it. That scene was a metaphor. The detachable nacelles represent progress and innovation, the Orion tentacles represent Gene's Vision, while Disco being ensnared by the tentacles represents how the franchise is stuck being bound to the old ways.

The poor ship got tentacle raped

I'm surprised they didn't retrofit Discovery with the transformer tech we've seen on Book's ship.

Which leads us to ... starships transforming into giant robots - missed opportunity. They could've had Discovery transform into Voltron (with both nacelles merging to form the sword) and then just sliced thru those nasty tentacles quick as look at you.

Voyager J, Defiant L and Enterprise T can all join together to form a Voltron-style robot.

If they made Discovery fully morphable like Book's ship, it could have Houdini'd it's way out for sure.

But it probably would've take more than 3 weeks refit time to do it.
