Mystery Woman in The Cage"

You mean the slide projectors in the overhead displays?

FYI on the series what they used were backlit transparencies for those overhead screens, which is why they are so static. It was a cost issue.

After "The Cage" was on film, the labor union enforced a rule requiring each slide projector to be operated by its own stagehand. And that was the end of dynamic overhead displays on the bridge.

Help me out guys. This actor is the only original series actor out of 400 whose name I don't know. He's from "piece of the action" He was guarding the door when the kid distracted him and the other guard and Kirk and Spock knock them out. He was a staple in desilu Productions and appeared in many Untouchables and even in Colossus: the Forbin Project.

I'm sorry, I don't remember him.
;)

Try to think man! He was at the press conference when you announced Colossus to the world he was a cameraman I know you were busy that day but still....

The mystery woman is important, as she almost always comes up in discussions over Pike's "not being used to women on the bridge, except for you, Number One" comment. She could hypothetically shine light on what the process was in deciding her presence on the bridge, even as it clashed with the scripted dialogue.

And I know we're a subset of a subset of a subset, but I don't know why we don't constantly run across social media posts of "my grandpa was in Star Trek" and use those to pinpoint actors of old. I know it was just another job to them, but it exploded as a multi-million dollar movie and TV franchise.

And, really, The Cage is a very special and historic episode. I don't understand how all of their production sheets aren't readily available and looked over by hundreds. Sure, And the Children Shall Lead or Elaan of Troyius or Charlie X might have some mysteries no one has bothered to dig up, but one would think that The Cage would be looked upon even by regular TV historians for these nuggets of 1960s production info.

I think anyone writing such posts should also upload a scan of a private snapshot or portrait of the individual in question. More than a few people make unsubstantiated claims about relatives in films and TV shows.

That’s a pretty naïve statement. Production documents were often junked. Roddenberry’s TOS papers are at UCLA but until relatively recently you couldn’t just go in and photograph it. And there are hundreds of folders of materials and it’s a huge amount of work to document properly. And even the Cage material is not all in one neat folder, nor is everything present (or in the Justman papers). So it’s not always so easy. If it were, Cash’s books might be more accurate (but I doubt it).

And what’s so special about “The Cage” other than its being Trek’s failed pilot? It wasn’t the 1st 2nd pilot, despite what people have claimed. This is not a challenge. I’m curious what you think makes it historic other than what it is the antecedent of.

I just had a casual fan ask me who this woman was:

Do we have any idea who played that part?

No clue, but I'd be more interesting in finding out who put on that atrocious wig. Fascinating eyebrows, suggesting she's humanoid but from a planet arguably other than Vulcan or Romulus. She does have a Vulcan-like facial expression, so I wonder... So it's supposition-time: What if she is Vulcan and they wanted to hold that revelation off for a while (assuming the show would be picked up), which might in part explain the wig, to hide ears as they barely had enough budget for one set, which Nimoy ate out of abject protest when he found out Spock wasn't liked... (bad joke)

I like the wider collar...

However, what's even more interesting is the detail on the pants the bloke on the left with the Communications insignia with the wrinkled, aged yellowing paper (?!) - TOS pants had velcro stripes to put on phasers or other gear, on the sides or behind so is he wearing it backwards? Notice that Pike's pair isn't on backwards as there's no sign of velcro or fly opening or anything. Though the bored blue-shirt to the left of the turbolift has his velcro in an even different place, albeit far more disturbing... unless that's damage to the film print? And why am I paying so much detail to velcro?

Looks to me like he put the pants on inside out.

Considering the tactical harnesses* they put on to beam down to the planet, I don't think it's Velcro™. Probably just oddly shaped shadows.

*Not seen again until TFF, very Special Forces/SWAT, and WAAAYYY before their time.

There's a "between takes" photo floating around of the performer and in that shot, she has a very charming and endearing smile. As I'm at the office, my 'net access is somewhat limited, so I can't really search for it. (I'm surprised the firewall allows me access to the TrekBBS, frankly.)
