Mystery Solved: Season 3 is set in the year 2411

Memory Alpha have no direct source for this though. They're just surmised it from the "250th anniversary of Starfleet" slogans and the assumption that Starfleet was founded in the same year as the Federation.

Surely someone on Twitter could ask Matalas directly. He seems pretty open to fielding fan questions.

It has to be the Federation Starfleet (as opposed to Earth Starfleet) otherwise the anniversary would be thirty years earlier. I'm no dates expert but most signs seem to point to them being right. I expect we'll get some more concrete details as the season goes on.

I thought that at first, but did they say that it was the anniversary for the Federation? I was thinking they meant Starfleet (or, if Starfleet was around pre-ENT, maybe the launch of the NX-01), placing it in 2401. I remember conflicting reports than Season 2 was 2400 or 2401, I never heard 2402, though.

My guess is they are celebrating when Earth Starfleet became a Galactic Starfleet via the various fleets of different species working together. This happened in 2155. If this is the reason behind Frontier day Season 3 is set in 2405.

It's shown to be the 250th anniversary of Starfleet specifically in text visible on Raffi's displays.

Checks out.

Starfleet existed in the series Enterprise many years before the founding of the Federation. Starfleet was born out of the Warp 5 (NX) project as an institution to oversee humankind’s exploration of space using this new warp technology, it was actually Jonathan Archer’s dad, Henry who helped to set Starfleet up (I think?). Starfleet was a pseudo military organisation where it’s ‘soldiers’ needed a well rounded knowledge of how to survive in space as ‘jacks of all trades’ rather than simply knowing how to fire a gun.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I think that Starfleet was formed in the 2120’s, born from the United Earth and ‘Coalition’ of Planets. Henry archers son, Jonathan, took command of the NX-01 in 2151 with the Enterprise being the first Starfleet vessel of this name. 2401 would make sense as being 250 years from the launch of the NX-01 Enterprise, but Starfleet itself was formed sometime in the preceding 20 years, not at the same time as the NX-01 launch so ‘Frontier Day’ may not be a celebration of the founding of Starfleet?

Frontier day may be celebrating the launch of the NX-01 in 2151. This may mean that we get a cameo of the NX-01 ship in the fleet parade? It could be leading the ‘ships of the line’. This may all be too much fan w*nk for me to handle though. I just may explode. :adore:

I’ll tweet Terry Matalas, if he is not too busy he might reply? Jonathan Archer cameo in a holo recording anyone?:D

Didn't exist at the time. "Starfleet " was Earth Starfleet. Not the same as Federation Starfleet necessarily.
Earth Starfleet became Coalition of Planets Starfleet though before it became the United Federation of Planets Starfleet. The organisation was ‘great grand fathered’ in to the latter. Same for Section 31, which was in the *very* fine small print.

But,technically, it's a new organization.

See, I posited in another thread 2411 because the Federation was founded in 2161, and therefore the Federation Starfleet probably at the same time as part of the Articles.

It's nice to have the date verified though.

Technically, Starfleet has been a new organisation 3 times from this perspective of yours:
  • In the 2120’s as a result of the NX Project When it was initially founded.
  • In the 2150’s when the Coalition of Planets was formed and it was adapted by a small interplanetary alliance as a joint pseudo military/exploratory organisation.
  • In 2161 when the United Federation of Planets was formed and Starfleet was fully absorbed by all members as part of membership with the purpose of being a joint exploratory and defensive force for all who sign up for membership.
Does Picard series 3 (with all of its 23rd century looking tech) take place in 2411? I think not, though it is possible. The 25th century is the new 2260’s…. But I still think that it is 2401.

Frontier Day is *definitely* a celebration of the NX-01 launch in my opinion. A bit like how ‘First Contact Day’ is celebrated in remembrance of the launch of the Phoenix in 2063. Picard season 3 may do an episode like the Lower Decks episode First, First Contact which helps explain all of this? They could even play ‘Faith of the Heart’ as the NX-01 flies by. :luvlove:

Would you say that Section 31 has always been one organisation over the centuries, @fireproof78 ? Or would you give the same argument in regards to Starfleets formation, with each iteration of this ‘beyond top secret service’ being separate, independent and with differing purpose and agenda?

Perhaps a Secrion 31 spin-off show can have a ‘Section 31 Day’ episode to explain?

Seven of Nine spin-off takes priority though, unless she gets killed off. :techman:

I'm not completely buying it without official confirmation. I reached out to Terry Matalas on Twitter, as I'm sure several folks have. Here's hoping one of us gets a reply!
