TOS "proto-remaster"

I’m looking once again at the magazine DVD edition of The City on the Edge of Forever and I’m seeing exactly what was on pre-remastered DVDs. The LaserDisc transfers are exclusive only to the LaserDiscs. They match the color timing of the examples you posted. I don’t know how, where and when these DVDs were cited as the same transfers as the LaserDiscs, but they are completely wrong. Even the back of the discs state that they have 5.1 audio, which lines up with the DVD versions.

I *think* all UK DVD releases post-magazine have a newer mix for The Menagerie (amongst others) but unsure of the magazine DVDs.

I *think* the magazine Cage uses the old VHS all-colour audio as the Keeper's voice switches.

I would suggest the magazine DVDs are probably VHS versions (although unsure if two-episode or three-episode editions.)

I'm not so familiar with the visual aspect.

Forgive the bump, but I came here looking for exact information on these, and wanted to thank everybody in the thread for the information!

I've kind of been on a bit of a quest lately to find the oldest, closest to first night version of episodes. Something I've noticed is that early VHS presentations, such as the individual episode per tape versions, not only feature more variation in color grading and generally present the episodes in production order rather than network broadcast order, but also have the authentic production idents at the end of episodes: every episode in Season 2 from The Immunity Syndrome through Assignment: Earth replaces the Desilu logo with a 1968 Paramount Television one, and every episode of Season 3 also has the period authentic Paramount Television ident from 1968/1969.

Further, I have several VHS tapes released by (I guess authorized by Paramount? But maybe not?) third party VHS companies that feature episodes sourced from what appear to be very, very old 16mm transmission prints. I have a copy of Tomorrow Is Yesterday on VHS where the print source quality is very ropey, but it does contain something I have never seen elsewhere: the interstitial slide frames at the commercial breaks of the Enterprise in orbit of a planet and the STAR TREK logo. (While these are not typically on the prints these days, the Animated Series did immortalize them as a part of it's official title sequence, so I must imagine they were pretty common to be seen even during the syndicated television era).

Does anyone else here keep these kinds of things, or am I the only weird one? :D;)

The second season episodes airing in 1968 should have the Rising Circle Paramount logo on them to be truly accurate.

Sorry for the squishing, I didn't make this video and the Norway productions version is harder to find.

On the US releases, I've only seen it on The Omega Glory Columbia House VHS print. I've heard it was on one or two of the blue case VHS releases of an episode or two. Season 3 is correct on the pre-2006 DVDs and other home video releases/

The laser disc print of Mirror Mirror has it right after the main credits, that's the only place I found it on home video. I do have an old 16mm print of Brad and Circuses which also carries it,.

No, there are two of us. :) And I love finding this stuff. I add it to digital copies and play them over my media server. :)

I can confirm the magazine version of The Cage I have has the voices pitch corrected, which surprised me because I was expecting it to be the earlier version!

Hahaha, yep that's the one! :) My copies are PAL 2-episode per tape releases from Time Life video, which definitely have the rising circle Paramount logo at the end of The Immunity Syndrome, A Piece of The Action, By Any Other Name, Return To Tomorrow, Patterns of Force, The Ultimate Computer, The Omega Glory and Assignment: Earth. The third season episodes on these releases then all contain the Paramount TV logo in a rectangle that zooms in on the logo part.

The PAL Time Life VHS tapes also contain Miri, The Menagerie 1 & 2, Space Seed and The Changeling apparently sourced from a 16mm print too, but this time without the between commercials interstitial slides. These versions aren't complete though and have some very abrupt cuts especially around where the commercial breaks would be. The pre-credits reprise at the start of Menagerie 2 is also missing, for some reason.

That's really interesting to learn about Mirror, Mirror! It goes to show a lot of these pre-DVD releases and international versions must have sourced their episodes from a variety of different places! I love the work put into restoring the show, but there's something I find fun about charting all these myriad of different, pre-remaster versions. :)
