I haven't actually gotten ahold of this yet, but it's dated the 14th and I figured that was close enough to go ahead and start this thread. I don't know about anyone else but I am really looking forward to this. While all of the stories sound good, Tears of Eridanus sounds the most interesting to me.
EDIT: What the hell? I set up a poll, but it gave me an error and now it didn't post. Grrrrrr. :scream: :klingon: :censored: :brickwall: :ack: :barf:

According to amazon.de they're preparing it for shipping and I should get it Tuesday. But I have other things to read first, so no idea when I'll read it.

Re: MyrU: Shattered Light Review Thread

I haven't read any of the MyrU books yet but I'm just finishing up the last of the MirU books (so far) and have REALLY enjoyed them so I'm really looking forward to starting the MyrU books and love the thought of another one.

I know there's another full length MirU novel scheduled to come out late next year or early 2012. Here's hoping they get ideas for and green light some more or maybe some full-length MyrU novels.

Just wanted to let everyone know this is available online from Barnes and Noble, and Amazon, and in stores from B&N. Borders still has it on pre-order, but they do have a google preview up for it.

Re: MyrU: Shattered Light Review Thread

So, has no one started this one yet? I'm still waiting for the e-book to download on Tuesday (cue the Generations joke), but I plan on starting it as soon as I get a hold of it.

After the somewhat bad taste in my mouth from StF, I'm waiting till the new year before I order both this and Rough Beasts.

Re: MyrU: Shattered Light Review Thread

Just finished "Embrace of Cold Architects." Ended rather abruptly, I thought...

And yes, I have the whole thing, not just the excerpt. :p

I guess I was just expecting something more epic. I thought they'd do something more than just try and mass replicate Soong-type androids for war. Starfleet's supposed to be better than that, after all...

I thought that when Data found the secret level at Galor Four with the android production facility, there'd be a retelling of "Brave New World," with the population of the Federation itself transplanting into android bodies. I also thought the Borg would be involved, but it seems the only reason they did the thing with Picard dying as Locutus was to turn Riker into a whiner for the rest of the story.

I really hope "Tears of Eridanus" and "Honor in the Night" are better than this. If whoever wrote "Architects" is here, I'm sorry for saying all this, but I can't deny how I felt about the story.

^ No offense taken. To each their own.

In actuality, given that the other alternate-history tales in all three volumes of the Myriad Universe series are epic, I intentionally opted for a more intimate story. From reading these boards for a while now, I'm familiar with--or at least I think I am--your preference for works that emphasize action as opposed to emotions. That being the case, it doesn't surprise me at all that you didn't care for The Embrace of Cold Architects. As I said, to each their own.

Re: MyrU: Shattered Light Review Thread

^ Oh crap. :alienblush: I can't believe I forgot 1) who wrote that story, and 2) that they would be here...

I gotta go. :(

Re: MyrU: Shattered Light Review Thread

^ No need to feel bad. Appreciating a written work is a subjective matter, and I genuinely take no offense at your criticism. I'm hopeful that most readers will like The Embrace of Cold Architects, but it's always possible that I failed in my job as a writer. But I take no issue with you offering an opinion to other readers.

Re: MyrU: Shattered Light Review Thread

Out of curiosity, I know this was announced before Marco was laid off and then delayed a lot; how much of the process was he in charge of? Did he approve the outlines, or just get the initial proposals, etc. I think this is probably the last published book that he had any impact on, editorially; I'm curious how much.

Re: MyrU: Shattered Light Review Thread

My review of the eBooks says that S&S need to learn how to embed fonts. They put font files in the ePub obviously to be used and they botch the code to activate them. Ever since I got Seize the Fire, every eBook from S&S has had botched embedded fonts. I've had to go in and fix them. But thankfully, I do know what I am doing.

It would be nice if an author was to tell S&S to get their heads out of their read-ends and make proper eBooks. Use your own words if you think it would work better.

Re: MyrU: Shattered Light Review Thread

Finished The Embrace of Cold Architects and I liked it a lot. My only issue is that yes, it DOES feel incomplete. Any chance of boosting this into a longer novel and seeing how the Cardassian/Federation war played out?

I can't speak for anyone else, but Marco worked with us on our initial outline, rejecting the first idea we had entirely, and then suggesting a major change once we resubmitted it. By the time we submitted the manuscript, it was in Margaret Clark's bailiwick, but she was laid off before she did any editorial work on it, and we did our revisions under Jaime Costas. Marco-- as a freelancer-- did the copyedits on the manuscript. When Jaime was on maternity leave, her editorial assistant wrapped it up.

Short answer: What Steve said. :techman:

If you're interested in a long answer, I've posted part one of a two-part piece about Shattered Light's bumpy road from pitches to publication on my blog at http://scottpearson.livejournal.com/136963.html.

Now that the book is showing up in stores, I really do have to finish part two.

That sounds insane. Has all publishing been like this the last couple years, or just Trek?

Lots of publishers, not just Simon & Schuster, have had to lay off people over the last year or two. Publishing is going through a bumpy transition. :(

Like any good tale, I'm now eagerly awaiting part 2.

Note to self: finish part 2 of blog post soon to avoid getting struck by lightning.
