Re: MyrU: Shattered Light Review Thread

Downloaded my Nookbook copy today, and since it intrigued me the most I started with Tears of Eridanus. Although after reading the bit about Embrace up thread I am more curious about it. The emotional and personal elements have your other books were some of my favorite parts, so hearing that there's alot of that in Embrace of Cold Architects does raise my level of interest in it.

Re: MyrU: Shattered Light Review Thread

Oh, one other Architects nitpick:

Is Admiral Haftel so clinically thick that he didn't allow for the possibility that Data could perfectly mimic his voice and thus escape from Galor Four?

Re: MyrU: Shattered Light Review Thread

Just out of curiosity how many canon characters are in Tears? I skimmed some of the story to see who I saw when I first started it and I noticed
Hikaru and Demora Sulu, Amanda Greyson, Dax, M'Benga, and I saw Thelin but I think that might have just been a reference. I also saw a Vulcan who was being referred to as Candle Guy, and I thinking he was probably either Soval (who's mentioned in the description) or Sarek (he seemed to be interacting with Amanda alot so it seems to me he's a good possibility).

Candle Guy isn't Sarek or Soval. There's also Shras and Gav, plus a few Vulcans like T'Pau, Sybok, and Tal. I think that's it for appearances, though a couple others are mentioned.

Re: MyrU: Shattered Light Review Thread

I know it fit the over-all story, but it was annoying to see Data passed over for promotion...and by Worf of all people...And I can't believe Riker expected Shelby to even consider the Head of Security gig...talk about a step down...

Of course, those are minor nit-picks, and I enjoyed the story over-all. It wasn't a favorite of mine, but it was passable.

Cool. I'm only about 10 or 15 pages into it, but so far I'm liking it alot. This is actually the first story by you and Michael Schuster that I've read.

My review of the eBooks says that S&S need to learn how to embed fonts. They put font files in the ePub obviously to be used and they botch the code to activate them. Ever since I got Seize the Fire, every eBook from S&S has had botched embedded fonts. I've had to go in and fix them. But thankfully, I do know what I am doing.

It would be nice if an author was to tell S&S to get their heads out of their read-ends and make proper eBooks. Use your own words if you think it would work better.

Dear JWolf: although you've been posting here for some time now, please let me introduce you to TrekBBS. It's a place that has no official connection to Simon & Schuster, and where no one who produces the ebooks has ever appeared. Complaining here is every bit as effective as standing in your front lawn in a neon pink bathrobe screaming out your posts at the top of your lungs. Less, probably. And not as cringingly entertaining.

Re: MyrU: Shattered Light Review Thread

Just finished "Tears of Eridanus." I liked it, but I have a wee question:

What, if anything, has happened to Earth? In one of Demora's flashbacks, she says that Earth is gone, but most of the rest of the Earth references suggested it was still there. And of course S'task is a character here; what of Surak? Does he even exist in this universe?

Be sure to save this, since you'll probably have to repost it in two weeks when Rough Beasts releases...

Also, could Candle Guy be Spock?

Glad you enjoyed it!

Nothing! Demora's just saying that for her, Earth is gone-- leaving the planet when she was that young, she doesn't really have any special attachment to it. That said, I did have this notion that in a reality where Earth wasn't the center of the Federation, no one would have scrambled to save it in one of those Big Disaster moments, and it had been destroyed by V'Ger or the Whale Probe. But we didn't put that in the story because it would be silly.

As to Surak: well... something's different, isn't it?

If Spock is Candle Guy, then Amanda Grayson had better explain what she was doing on Minshara back in 2230 bonking the locals!

Short answer: What Steve said. :techman:

If you're interested in a long answer, I've posted part one of a two-part piece about Shattered Light's bumpy road from pitches to publication on my blog at http://scottpearson.livejournal.com/136963.html.

Now that the book is showing up in stores, I really do have to finish part two.

Like any good tale, I'm now eagerly awaiting part 2.

For anyone interested in more behind-the-scenes details about how Myriad Universes: Shattered Light finally got on shelves, here's my novella's story in part two of a two-part post on my blog: http://scottpearson.livejournal.com/137663.html

Re: MyrU: Shattered Light Review Thread

Oops. Never mind my last question about Candle Guy. I forgot, that's one character that he couldn't possibly be. :alienblush:

Also I thought that was pretty funny about life forms being referred to as 'andorianoid'.

Re: MyrU: Shattered Light Review Thread

I'm halfway through Honor in the Night. It's already my favorite out of the three.

Am a bit confused by all of the time jumps, but I'm ok with it. And I was definitely not expecting Nilz Baris to be presented as the good guy, or even *a* good guy. I think I know why he said 'Arne Darvin' as he lay dying though...

Thanks! Glad to hear you're enjoying it. I don't think it's a spoiler for me to say that Nilz Baris may be a self-righteous prig, but he has legitimate concerns, motives, and goals. The nuances of his POV weren't explored in "The Trouble with Tribbles" because the character's purpose in the episode was to be Kirk's foil, the bureaucrat the viewer loves to hate and snicker at, and William Schallert nailed it. My alternate timeline sequel takes a serious approach and explores Baris's side of things while, I hope, remaining true to the original portrayal--both Schallert's performance and David Gerrold's script.

Re: MyrU: Shattered Light Review Thread

I finished "Honor..." and definitely liked it. Now THIS was epic, like MyrU should be! :techman:

Wasn't expecting Darvin to show up in disguise AGAIN...

I agree, Nilz Baris may have been a typical bureaucrat, but I was glad to see that he had reasons for doing what he did. His ongoing feud with Kirk didn't mean he didn't still have a job to do. And we never got the chance to find out in the original episode that he was actually pretty GOOD at his job, especially when fighting the Klingons!
I'm glad that even after he died, he was still remembered fondly as an honorable man and a good president. I hope the reporter doesn't do anything to jeopardize that. It ended before we had a chance to find out what she did... Also it was very nice to see Darvin's side of things as well, especially after watching all those colonists die made him develop his own sense of honor. Pity that the real Darvin never got the chance...
