^ The problem with that, obviously, and the reason why dystopias and bleak alternate realities are so much more common than the alternative, is that a better, near-utopian future / parrallel timeline is, by nature, a world with less conflict and thus a world with less potential for storytelling.
I suppose so. It's the same reason why every character in soap operas is always evil. Death, pain, suffering, they all sell. They make things sell more. I wish it wasn't like that, but it's human nature to want to read about other people getting screwed.
