Don't know where I got Rob from... has nice ring though don’t you think, Rob Robberson...

Sounds like something the Hamburglar might say...

Oops, looks like that was my fault as they got the info via my blog. Don't know where I got Rob from... has nice ring though don’t you think, Rob Robberson...

I'm good at jumbling names I spelt Keith's wrong before...

There's still a b to much in his last name on your blog. ;)

Re: Myriad Universes?

Amazon.com shows what seems to be the Final Cover for Infity's Prism:

Re: Myriad Universes?

No, that's just the solicitation cover. I know for a fact Marco was working on putting a final cover together as of last month.
Yep. I think he said he was soliciting artwork from John Picacio, the same guy who is doing the Terok Nor covers (and who had previously done the Crucible covers).

It is odd, though, that Amazon somehow got hold of a color version of the dummy promo cover and opted to put it on the site. I sincerely hope it's not an indication that the planned cover art fell through.

No, just an indication that Amazon are still useless when it comes to telling the difference between promo and finalised covers. Heck, they get dates, titles and everything else wrong with some books, why not covers?

Indeed. That's the solicitation cover (which was produced in color, it was just printed in the catalogue in b&w). Last I heard, John P.'s artwork wasn't finished yet.....

Re: Myriad Universes?

So, let's see, that would be (edited to add Chris Roberson's title which Geoff mentions in the next post):

INFINITY'S PRISM:
Places of Exile by Christopher L. Bennett
A Less Perfect Union by William Leisner
Seeds of Dissent by James Swallow

ECHOES AND REFRACTIONS:
A Gutted World by Keith R. A. DeCandido
Brave New World by Chris Roberson
The Chimes at Midnight by Geoff Trowbridge

(Going alphabetically for each volume -- I don't know if they'll actually be in that order.)

Those are some heavy titles. These aren't all utter downers/dystopias, are they? You know, like this?

The Places of Exile timeline is definitely not dystopian, though it's not entirely rosy either. It shows a different path history could've taken, and naturally there are tradeoffs -- some things better, some things worse.

My story isn't nearly that bleak (though I know of at least one story in the collection that might be).

Granted, some Very Bad Things happen in my tale, but it's more about how individuals and societies choose to deal with such crises, and the moral questions surrounding those decisions.

Hmmm. I have always been a sucker for 'what-if' stories, but I never knew it would be quite like this. Oh well, I suppose I should be safe if I listen to a lot of comedy albums beforehand.

You've got me curious, now -- what cheery, optimistic "what if" stories have you been reading? I mean, I'm a big fan of the alternate history genre myself, but between the South-wins-the-Civil-War and Hitler-wins-WWII subgenres, it's not exactly the stuff you would recommend to a chronic depressive.

Well, it's not like I thought it was all happy-happy-joy-joy, it's just that the ones these days seem to be unrelentingly depressing and bleak. Remember the Marvel comic I cited? And look at the ones we're talking about here. When they start using words like "gutted", that's when my radar goes off. :p

(This is also why I haven't even bought Obsidian Alliances yet... )

It'd be interesting to see if any of these Trek stories actually have timelines that turned out BETTER than the original. :vulcan:

^ The problem with that, obviously, and the reason why dystopias and bleak alternate realities are so much more common than the alternative, is that a better, near-utopian future / parrallel timeline is, by nature, a world with less conflict and thus a world with less potential for storytelling. That said, I'm sure the editors are aware that difference doesn't automatically equal something worst than the status quo, and that we'll see a mix of dystopic and heterotopic takes on the Trek universe in these collections.

Does an alternate universe actually have to be better or worse than the original? Can't it be just different?

Places of Exile definitely turns out better in some ways, but worse in some regards and mixed in others. I don't see MyrU as being about "this is better" or "this is worse." Whatever alternate path you take is likely to have its positives and negatives, and it's exploring both sides that makes it interesting. PoE contains a lot of things that I would've liked to see happen as a viewer, but a pretty high price has to be paid for some of those things to come about. I made sure of that because I didn't want it to be just an exercise in wish fulfillment. That wouldn't have been as engaging as a more balanced approach.

I can't wait to read these books. The more I hear about them, the more excited I become.
