My Works in Progress (WiP) meta-thread

Commodore_Sarvour

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
Here is where I'll be listing & updating my Works in Progress (WiP).

Current Projects:
Aristarchus-class Command Cruiser
Hyperion-class, Tarek-subclass & Sally Ride-subclass Exploration Cruisers
Challenger-class Scout
⬣Golden Hedrons, relics of ancient spacefaring civilizations.
⯐These four i am focusing on for 200th Fan Art Forum Challenge. My revised armaments for the Franz Joseph TOS ship designs, will be part of the project.
Edit (2 Oct, 2021): The art challenge has passed, but i am continuing these as i am able. More of an update today or tomorrow depends on if i can lose this headache. The 1st pass at configuring the Hyperion-class will now continue as the Sally Ride-subclass.

Moved to the Back Burner:
⬢NX-2700/Joshua-class Command Cruiser. Made for the March 2017 Art Contest, it is a passion project i am continuing to refine. I need to make the Aft & Ventral views, clean up the existing views' sheets, and make a sheet or two focusing on details & tech systems.
⬢Trek Timelines Infographic. Charting the Star Trek Multiverse and Temporal Wars.
⬢circa 2150 Carrier, Shuttle, Fighter & Space Tank designs.
⬢Battleship Akagi. It started as one of my first Trek kitbash ships. From Constitution-class Heavy Cruiser, to Constitution Refit/Enterprise-class, to tech testbed, to a Battleship in the Federation-Cardassian Border Wars.
⬢Klingon-Federation hybrid ships. A Dreadnought based on the D7's design, adding a massive Disruptor Cannon. Also a few FASA designs i like but felt they needed a bit of work.
Turning the FASA-canon K'mirra-class (translated as Alliance-class) battlecruiser into Two Ships; a battlecruiser matching the image (post-rework) & a heavy destroyer matching the dimensions published.

Added to the Back Burner:
⬢Ideas for Klingon Runabouts/Heavy Tactical Shuttles, in service in the latter half of the 23rd century & throughout the 24th. Multiple classes, ≈30 to 50 meters long, some made to be evocative of the fanon K'T'Orr-class destroyer, the FASA-canon K'mirra-class (translated as Alliance-class) battlecruiser, and the beta canon Klingon shuttles from Spaceflight Chronology & Star Trek Online.

Concepts Needing Research and/or Development (future projects):
⬡Variants of the Jupiter Station-type facilities, made from saucer hulls, but with the Impulse Engines intact, in addition to the RCS systems.
⬡K-class deep space stations with TMP-TNG Drydocks added.
Nevada-class Support Cruisers, TOS-era precursors to the TNG/Lower Deck's California-class, based on another Matt Jeffries sketch.

Where are the images??????

Where's the beef??????
I snapped a pic of my sketches of the WIPs; i am having computer issues, but will, i hope, be able to upload it later today.
Finished schematics will be posted in the appropriate Art Contest threads and project-specific threads, and links to such will be included here.

Study for previsualization.

The Oberth is a funny little ship that doesn't seem to make much sense when one considers its supposed size and the MSDs, but I wouldn't have it any other way - I love it!
It's nice to see some sketches and ideas - thanks for sharing these :)

I always thought 150-180 meters was more realistic. 120 meters is too small for a crew of 80-100, imho.

What was your age when these were drawn?
Cut it out immediately! This kind of “humor” (?) is not needed here. And if I see you trying to exert it again anywhere in this forum, it will be a formal warning.

Re-Engineering The Franz Joseph Fleet.
First, the original armaments as listed in the Star Fleet Technical Manual:
CLASS I HEAVY CRUISER Constitution-class Starship
Main Phasers 3 Banks/2 Emitters Each
Photon Torpedoes 2 Banks. *Aft arc is not covered. 2 Phaser Emitters can barely cover the aft, but a blind spot remains.
CLASS I DESTROYER Saladin-class Starship
Main Phasers 3 Banks/2 Emitters Each
Photon Torpedoes 2 Banks. *Aft arc is not covered. 2 Phaser Emitters can barely cover the aft, but a blind spot remains.
CLASS I SCOUT Hermes-class Starship
Main Phasers 1 Banks/2 Emitters Each
Photon Torpedoes None. *Aft arc is not covered. 2 Phaser Emitters can barely cover the aft, but a blind spot remains.
CLASS I TRANSPORT╱TUG Ptolemy-class Starship
Main Phasers 2 Banks/2 Emitters Each
Photon Torpedoes None. Phaser Banks are situated fore and aft, and can cover the flanks reasonably well.
CLASS I DREADNOUGHT Federation-class Starship
Main Phasers 5 Banks/2 Emitters Each
Photon Torpedoes 2 Banks

At a glance these seem fair and reasonable.
Multiple games have based their ships on these armaments & firing arcs.
That said, It is very unrealistic. Most modern naval vessels have armaments that are turreted, allowing all areas around the ship to be covered, even if it takes two or more to do so.
Given real world history to inform ship design, and in the TOS future history having at least one Romulan War and a Klingon War before the events shown in TOS, having a blind spot on your ship of the line would never be approved.
Having 3/5 your fleet handicapped in this way is a strategic blunder.
In the series ENTERPRISE, the TOS Defiant is shown firing aft Phasers. According to canon, the Constitution-class had midship Phasers, and a forward battery of 4-8 emitters (2-4 Banks).

I am also thinking of revising terminology. Franz Joseph uses 'Bank' for a pair of Phaser Emitters, and for singe Torpedo Launch Tubes. I am leaning toward changing it so it is used per pair. Should i do a poll?

With that in mind, this is my revised weapons loadout for these ships:
CLASS I HEAVY CRUISER Constitution-class Starship
Main Phasers 5 Banks/2 Emitters Each
Photon Torpedoes 4 Banks.
CLASS I DESTROYER Saladin-class Starship
Main Phasers 4 Banks/2 Emitters Each
Photon Torpedoes 4 Banks.
CLASS I SCOUT Hermes-class Starship
Main Phasers 4 Banks/2 Emitters Each
Photon Torpedoes 2 Banks
CLASS I TRANSPORT╱TUG Ptolemy-class Starship
Main Phasers 4 Banks/2 Emitters Each
Photon Torpedoes 2 Banks. Phaser Banks are situated fore and aft, and can cover the flanks reasonably well. Additional Phaser Banks on Port & Starboard, provides superior coverage, eliminating gaps in broadsides/flanking fire.
CLASS I DREADNOUGHT Federation-class Starship
Main Phasers 6 Banks/2 Emitters Each
Photon Torpedoes 4 Banks

And my ships:
CLASS I EXPLORATION CRUISER Hyperion-class Starship
Main Phasers 5 Banks/2 Emitters Each
Photon Torpedoes 4 Banks.

CLASS I EXPLORATIONCRUISER Hyperion-class Starship, Tarek subclass
Main Phasers 5 Banks/2 Emitters Each
Photon Torpedoes 4 Banks.

CLASS I HEAVY SCOUT Challenger-class Starship
Main Phasers 5 Banks/2 Emitters Each
Photon Torpedoes 4 Banks.

CLASS I COMMAND CRUISER Aristarchus-class Starship
Main Phasers 6 Banks/2 Emitters Each
Photon Torpedoes 4 Banks.

My point of asking was that if they were done at a young age (which the manner of writing seemed to indicate) then they would have been done well for someone of a younger age. If done at the age to 50, perhaps not so much.

It was not humour. It was a question. (Which he may have messaged you about.) And of which we spoke privately.

The context made it pretty clear what the image is. I'm afraid I don't buy your cluelessness. But let's just drop the issue entirely. All I did was giving you a friendly warning to be more careful with your words, nothing more. Should be easy enough to abide by. This won't be discussed any further in this thread. Should you need any more clarification, feel free to PM me. Otherwise I consider this issue dealt with.

I thought my ambitions for the 200th Fan Art Forum Challenge was reasonable, even with the problems i am having with my computer. I was sorely mistaken. The last couple weeks i was fighting my OS more than ever, with the OS setting a new record for crashes, glitches, and random ffff-ups making more problems i have to fix.
That is why i didn't take the time to do any updates, and why i'm not throwing part of an unfinished project into the competition.

Here is the Hyperion-class Exploration Cruiser, about 80% done. I aim to finish it but right now seeing what i can do to get a new computer will be taking priority. Having to fight the OS to get anything done kinda takes the joy out of things.

I am debating bringing the Nacelles in closer. Either way the running lights at the topside edges of the saucer will have to be moved to the tops of the nacelles.

Thanks guys! Glad to hear you like it!

Here are the references i am using to inform my designs, from https://www.trekbbs.com/threads/obe...g-link-between-enterprise-and-reliant.222328/ & http://fsd.trekships.org/art/1701.html, respectively:

I am posting them here partly for my own benefit, as i keep forgetting the file names & computer troubles making it harder to find & view images, partly to share my reasoning in the design process, and lastly as a PSA.
These images are hard to find even with directed word/keyword searches in different search engines. I uploaded the copies i saved to my enjin account and will post them on twitter next, as they will add it to your Gallery, where there is one url for the post, and a 2nd one for the image itself.
I urge anyone who can upload it to any reliable platform they can & share! The more we backup & share these concept sketches, the easier & more accessible they'll be to other seekers!

Here is another inspiration! Not how i would do it, but a beautiful vision of what a TOS Oberth could be none the less!

I am working on draft 0.8.2 of the Hyperion, and will edit it into this post once i am satisfied with it & upload it. I am bringing in the nacelles a bit, i had them too far out in the first iteration.
