My Star Trek Fake Footage Contest Entry

PixelMagic

Fleet Captain
Over the past two weeks, Trekmovie.com and I09.com have sponsored a contest to see who could create the best "fake footage" from J.J. Abrams' new Star Trek movie.

More details about the contest here...

So below is my entry. I've worked on it for two weeks, but it took that long to model the saucer and the shuttles. I actually did this shot(animation, rendering, compositing) in less than 24 hours.

Obviously, because I had less than 24 hours to do it, it's a bit subpar, but I think it came out pretty well anyway. I wish I had more time to tweak, but oh well.

The concept is that the Enterprise components are built on Earth, and the pieces are hauled up into space by tug shuttles using tractor beams. This is the saucer section being lifted into orbit. Let me know what you guys think.:)

Ok if that shot is not in the movie I AM BOYCOTTING! HELL YEAH! :p

Actually that's a neat shot. Very impressive!

Nice! Looks cool.

(I could point out that a ship which can slingshot around the sun at warp 10 could probably handle getting to orbit without needing any help, but who wants to open that can o' worms?)

Very Very Nice, PixelMagic - I was working on my own one of the Enterprise chasing the "golden squid ship" thing people have described seeing at Toy Fair through the clouds, but the enterprise I was using was a half built version of Gabes One, so best I could pass it off as is a animatic :p

Still though, your's looks awesome, hope you win ;)

Very cool. :techman:

Do you think you could scale the pic down a bit so it doesn't stretch the page sideways? Thanks.

By the way... it makes logical sense to tow it into space like that to prevent possible mishaps... :vulcan: (think tugboats)

Awesome! I really like it a lot. I'll be rooting for you. :)

Wow that's awsome. Wish I could do 3D. I've been working up some ortho drawings of my "Enterprise XI" conjecture. Are you going to follow up with more ship renders? I'm curious on your take on the big jet nacelles, and what the secondary hull might end up looking like. BTW, that aztec texture is awsome. Very much like the spoiler shots.

In short, PLEASE DO MORE!...:)

I'm seriously envious here. A rush job? To a layman like me, you could drop that into a film and I'd be none the wiser if it wasn't major studio quality.

Daniel (Pixel Magic), you made that faux teaser a few months back didn't you? Had a lot of folks fooled, including me. How did you get started with creating CGI? Are you studying it at University or work free-lance within the industry?

Amazing work for a 'rushed' job.

Hey ILM hire this guy, like yesterday ;-)

Not many shallow waters/fellow ships/docks to bump into. This sort of thing could be done to test the engines or something though, who knows.

Anyway, it's a cool image, and that's what counts.

I just congratulated you there, but I'll do it again here: Congrats, Daniel! I think you can be proud of yourself. :bolian:

Having watched the others, you can be so proud! Like the one guy said... ILM should hire you!!!
