My Son's First Trek Viewing

Devil in the Dark did not go as well as "Arena". He was jumping up and down almost the entire episode, a little scared of the Horta. Still it was a good episode for him to watch as the message is great. He knows who Kirk is now.

Watching Miri with my 2 year old I had a moment of panic when we got to the scene where the disfigured Onlie attacks Bones for touching his bike. I'd forgotten about that bit, and that scene used to scare me as a kid

He just laughed and did his usual performance when there's a monster - he squints his eyes, and sticks his arms out Frankenstein-style and says "Eeeeeee" - then, as usual grabbed the hand phaser and blasted away at the screen.

This is so much fun :guffaw:

It is best to show them TOS at a young age before they're aware of such things as production values.

THen even after seeing modern stuff, they still eat up TOS. We just watched Galileo 7 last night. TOS often is such well structured drama with well-crafted words. Better in that regard than any other Trek series.

My son loves the Gorn race and ships thanks to seeing Arena early. When we watch a TOS, I have steered them away from snoozers for kids ("That Which Survives," "World is Hollow," but towards classics and more action oriented eps. My 10 year old daughter - a very normal kid, somehow - watches along with her brother and finds Spock's lines often very amusing. Which in fact they are. We always wait through the credits to see if Herb Solow will be backgrounded as Balok or Vina.

Be well.

How old is your son? Mine is six and we JUST watched ARENA last week. And like you I am steering him away from the snoozers. We watched SHORE LEAVE recently, and DOOMSDAY is still his favorite. We also watched TOMRRORW IS YESTERDAY, which he liked to.

And since they are bluray with the new FX, it helps there too. Some of the new CGI stuff is,well, okay...but he gets into them more than the old stuff...

I'm going to try DEVIL IN THE DARK tonight..which is kind of slow..but has a monster too..we shall see!!!

Okay, we are up to his 3rd episode now. We just finished watching "A Private Little War". I think a lot of the episode is way over the head of my 4 year old son, but he loved the Mugatu. Very cool.

Who doesn't love the Mugato? Polar bear/gorilla with spikes and poison. The most badass animal in the galaxy. :)

Just thought I'd post that I showed my 4 year old son his first Trek episode this evening. He knows what trek is (I have most of the books and DVDs) and he has been raised with that stuff around the house.

I decided to show him the first episode I can remember watching.....

"Arena":techman:

He thought the Gorn was pretty scary, liked Spock's ears, and kept asking me if Cestus III was Earth. It was a success....78 more TOS episodes to go. Imagine viewing them again for the first time.

That's one of the fun things about Star Trek and really, any film or TV show. If you can get someone else into them you have a ready-made excuse (if you need one) to watch it all over again.

Great story. Glad it went over so well.

My son is five..and when he was four? His first episode he really got into was..ARENA also!!

Recently some dudes on this site were bashing ARENA because the 'fights looked fake' or 'kirk had no martial arts training'

Makes you wonder sometimes doesn't you...the episode ARENA works just fine...

My son's been watching for a few years hear and there. And he loved the movie. I just got the animated series. We watched the first one when i got it. But today He wanted to see the tribbles. So we ended up watching trouble with tribbles first. Then the animated more tribbles more troubles. Hes also anctiosly waiting the arrival of his Kellogg's Science t shirt. Yup I got him! :bolian:

I will try the animated series on my son again. We got it some time back and I couldn't get him into it. The animated show is good, but it is slow at times. And the music, though I like it, is a bit sleep inducing as well.

But now that he really like the new movie (which was the point you nay-sayers) maybe he will get into the animated series on second viewing..

The same thing, by the way, goes for the crazy BATMAN cartoon series with Batmite. Its not that great anyway, but for some reason, when we watch it, it seems to make us tired. And it shares many of the same music cues with Star Trek Animated, so maybe that is why. Or maybe because one guy seems to be doing all the guest vocals...oh well..

That's tremendous! I have my 6 month old daughter watching at least 2 TOS eps a day. Just watched Spectre Of The Gun this morning.

see? Try watching BATMAN/BATMITE cartoon or Tarzan..they all use the same music and cause even the most candy laced kids to fall asleep...

The only thing that works better? Disney's THE BLACK HOLE

What about nieces and nephews?? Any friends who have kids? I like that the best because you get to enjoy the kids and get all the good stuff and then you get to give them back LOL.

My 2 year old niece is already enamored with the TOS Enterprise. She has been since she was one or so. I have one of the smaller models (the Art Asylum one with lights and sounds) in our home office at my brother's house, and whenever my bro or sister-in-law would bring her in she'd point to it and say "On!" and make me go through all it's sounds.

Yeah, I'd say "A Private Little War" is a bit complex for a 4 year old to grasp. I suggest you have him see "Shore Leave". It'll probably not come across as science fiction, because most of it takes place on Earth with terrestrial characters. But it's good fun.

Another one that you might get him into is "A Piece Of The Action"... remember the kid in it? A connection for him to relate to.

Definitely do not let him see "And The Children Shall Lead"... he'll never stop air-pounding his fist when he wants something.

Umm..good idea! I almost showed this one last week. I will scratch CHILDREN SHALL LEAD from my list...which is okay with me since its pretty bad episode anyway..

I know Rob! People bring negative things up about TOS in this forum that I've never even thought of! I was going to say something in that thread about how "bad" Shatner's fighting was...and how ridiculous the statement is but I have to pick by battles.

My nephew loved piece of the action...hell he even loved Savage Curtain (that came on TV one night he was over)...we joke around all the time with "help me Spock"...he does it perfectly. The first ep I showed him was Miri ...I think because of all the kids in it...I wanted him to "relate"...he's been hooked since then so forget production values...it's true even with seeing modern productions...they still love TOS.

Just watched "The Savage Curtain". Sam wasn't into that much as it was already about an hour over his bed time. One of the ones I remember the most from my childhood though.
