My Son's First Trek Viewing

Jbarney

Captain
Captain
Just thought I'd post that I showed my 4 year old son his first Trek episode this evening. He knows what trek is (I have most of the books and DVDs) and he has been raised with that stuff around the house.

I decided to show him the first episode I can remember watching.....

"Arena":techman:

He thought the Gorn was pretty scary, liked Spock's ears, and kept asking me if Cestus III was Earth. It was a success....78 more TOS episodes to go. Imagine viewing them again for the first time.

My 2 year old had me up at 2am this morning, and we watched...you guessed it...Arena!

He loved the Gorn - every time he appeared on screen he shot him with his hand phaser - then after the episode I had to be a gorn for half an hour, getting repetedly shot by him. He kept pointing to himself and saying "Kirk"

Both of these are adorable stories. Brought a smile to my face, at least. :D

I am dismayed he was shooting at the Gorn and you let him.
This will encourage him to be racist against people who don't fit the norm.

You're very lucky, being able to share it with your child; I envy you :)

It is best to show them TOS at a young age before they're aware of such things as production values.

Thanks for the responses folks.....now that I have his interest, because he definately liked watching it....I'm wondering what we should watch next. I want to keep it simple for him, to keep him entertained.

Part of the reason why I chose "Arena" was because I knew he'd be into the Gorn, but I also thought Kirk's actions at the end of the episode would be a good thing for a little kid to see. If you don't have to kill, don't kill.

Trying to figure out what next. He'll probably like the tiger and the rabbit from "Shore Leave", maybe the Tribbles? He is only four after all....

Great great news..my son is five and after he saw XI, he can't get enough. He even sat through DEVIL IN THE DARK, which, though it is a good episode, is very slow in parts. He actually "got" the message at the end of that episode....

And then we watched...gasp..Space Seed. So tonight, in grand BLURAY, we will watch the Wrath of Khan..

But it is fun to watch that 'fire' go off inside of a kid who stars to watch STAR TREK. He askes me all these questions and then I tell him "Oh, you have no idea how many more adventures of Captain Kirk there are to see..."

Picard? ehh...

Yeah it's true...me and my nephew can't get thru an episode because he has so much commentary, statements and questions. The first ones I showed him too were similar to others selections, although he was a lot older than 4.... we hit Arena, Trouble with Tribbles, Devil in the Dark, & mirror mirror, those were the firsts........I kept a little list to keep track of what Ep's we've seen -- but it's amazing because I couldn't find the list but the kid remembered all the episodes! We love our Star Trek.

I'm in parental mode lately but don't yet have children. You're all making me envious. :)

What about nieces and nephews?? Any friends who have kids? I like that the best because you get to enjoy the kids and get all the good stuff and then you get to give them back LOL.
