My son and anime

Your son is 26, this is none of you business.

If you REALLY want to do him a favour, give him 60 days notice and then kick him out of your house. He will thank you eventually.

Why. He talk about me on chat at times. He told me so. I told him about this thread and he just didn't mind at all.

It isn't like I have identified him.

He likes living with me because it saves him money and therefore he can spend his money on anime and music instead of having to pay for an apartment. He enjoy enjoys the cooked meals and having his washing done etc.

Miscellaneous would be a boring place if we couldn't talk about the people in our lives.

Well, you do have to kick him out sometime, you know. Let him stand on his own two feet in the big bad world. :D

He has alr4eady moved out a couple of times but ended up returning home.

In Australia theyre isn't the same social stigma about living at home with your parents as there seem to be in the USA and some other places.

He has learnt it is easier to live with Mum that with friends. He want to stay in the very good neighbourhood we now live in but there is no way he could affors to rent a place in the neighbourhood.

I don't mind this son living at home as he works during the day so I get my alone time.

I always get a kick out of people who try to appear above it all by denigrating porn as "a mere substitute for the real thing." This pretty much negates the whole concept of Art, Photography, Literature, Moviemaking, Music.... :rommie:

It also doesn't take into account that many couples use porn as a tool to aid/spice up their sex lives.

I also think you are not doing him any favours keeping him at home. When you eventually do go (not for a long time I hope), it will be more impossible for him to adjust to being independent at the age of 50 or more, than it would be if he were to learn independence in his 20's. He's going to be stunted. He's of an age now when he should be able to take care of a partner, kids, and his mother even, let alone still being babied himself, having is laundry and food done, and not knowing what bills or sticking to a budget are. You are denying him valuable character building opportunities.

If you live in a nice area, I am very pleased for you, but it's a bit of a stretch if your son thinks his first home in his 20's should be in the nicest part of town. Sounds to me like he thinks the world owes him a living. A reality check will do you and him the world of good. Then maybe you could be taken care of for a change. Sounds to me like you've earned it. :)

My son who is 26 years old loves to watch anime. Except for the occasional sci-fi movie, a handful of TV shows (Dexter, Supernatural and Heroes) and wrestling, anime is about all he watches.

Now I don't look at anime because the characters big eyes freak me out. Therefore I don't know much about anime. Some of the anime he likes is

Ghost in a Shell
Bleach
Black Cat
Full Metal Alchemist
Inu Yashu
ChronoCrusade
Dragonball Z

Is it normal for a young man to be looking at anime (rather than porn)?

Anime is the latest annoying pop culture fad. I got out of it a few years ago. It's totally okay, as long as they don't start making statement like "It's not cartoons, it's anime" or "Japanese Shows are better than American ones" and other obnoxious stuff. Make sure he doesn't start using Japanese words in his English sentences.

The moment he starts saying Anime is not a fad, it's a lifestyle, it's time for an intervention.

As long as it doesn't control his life, and Girlfriends remain more important to him than Goku's Power Levels (which are, I believe, quite hight), he's okay.

Hate to tell you this, but Anime has been a 'pop culture fad' in the West since the 1960ies. StarBlazers got it some more notice in the late 1970ies; but it's been going fairly strong in the U.S. since Robotech hit the air back circa 1985; and has been moderately popular ever since. It's hardly 'new'; and I seriously doubt it'll be dropping of the pop culture radar anytime soon.

*sigh*

How many people heard about it 1995? A small cult following. How about in 1990? A small cult following. In 85? Again, a small group. These groups form whenver there is a major release (Akira, Ghost in the Shell, or previously, shows like Star Blazers) and they come and go in spurts.

Anime will drop off the radar, come back, disappear. Right now, it's actually coming off it's high, and sales are dropping, televised anime is going down as well (along with ratings) and will drop out of the public eye over the next couple years.

If you're talking pop culture, then yeah, things ebb and flow. You're not going to get the three hours on net tv forever, even Disney left that. But it's spread out enough that it's not going to be a small cult following any more.
It's like computer animation, for a while it was just a gimmick, but now it's used more than traditional animation in movies.

Don't remind me about the current trends in animation. Makes me want to vomit.... Computer animation wasn't a gimmick... Well, it was, but these people were still breaking new ground in Animation. And it was amazing. Each Pixar Film required them to create new technology. Then they stopped, and the new rennissiance was over. No more new ideas, just a new piece of technology to be overused.

Not since "A Bug's Life" have they been truly revolutionary..... And I always think Animators need to be pushing the art form forward. Luckily, we have Rapunzel with it's new "3 D Drawing" technique which will probably impact traditional animation more than computer animation (considering both are done on computer anyway) and MAYBE people realized that we can still push forward, and be innovative again.

Sorry, mini rant. Happens whenever people bring up Computer Animation. I am an Animator myself, and want to see it being pushed in new directions. CG was one a new direction.... I just hope Rapunzel (good or bad) has a lasting effect on animation (even if the movie ends up being terrible, or the technique does not live up to it's hype) so that people realize we can go farther.

I'm turning 26 at the end of this year and I love anime (Sailor Moon ftw).

It's normal, it is just something that keeps me happy and I love the stories. Animes are great at expressing emotions.

I'm an adult and just love anime. I grew to love "Sailor Moon" when I was in High School and watched it everyday after doing homework. Later on in college, got into "Inuyasha" and even got my roommate interested in it and she hardly ever watched TV! :D I also like "Cowboy Bebop" as well as "Big O". The greatest anime that I've watched thus far though is "Vandread" which is a mixture of Trek and Transformers. Gotta love that Dita and her calling Hibikyi "Mr. Alien". :D

Miscellaneous would be a boring place if we couldn't talk about the people in our lives.

I never suggested otherwise, I merely presented MY opinion on the topic: Moms should not concern themselves with their adult children's autoerotic activities. :techman:

He has learnt it is easier to live with Mum that with friends.

Obviously, but what is easiest is not always what is best.

I am concerned, guys. My grandma has stopped masturbating, which I learned when noting the level of vaseline in her container the bathroom. I have tried confronting her on the point, and even leaving toys around, but it is of no avail and she refuses to discuss the topic -- leading me to believe something is very wrong. Do you think she might be depressed? How often do your grandmas masturbate, TrekBBSers?

(not) Sincerely,

Richard

Well, I'm sufficiently grossed out.

That reminds me that omce a film crew did a tour of the former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam's residence. Many, many Australians just happened to noticed the jar of vaseline on the bedside table and commented on it.

I think the Whitlams were in their 60s at the time.

That said - my son is quite willing to talk about the topic of porn with me.

Well -- every single person I know feels extremely uncomfortable discussing pornography and sex with parents; one friend recently told me about his embarrassment when watching a movie with his parents (Braveheart) and a sex scene appeared. If I were asked by a parent if I watched pornography, I would say, "no" to end the conversation and avoid that uncomfortable area.

Edit - am googling Whitlam now.

Yeah, it's great that Miss Chicken is so comfortable talking about this kind of stuff with her kids, but it's really not normal.
