My sister Want's to get A PS3, is it worth it?

People actually care about exclusives? Wow....

I could care less about them. A game is a game is a game. I just want to play it. NOTHING in the gaming world is exclusive and I can't believe people still fall for that. Eventually, every game shows up on another console. I don't see a problem with that.

I love the PS3 controller. It's the easiest controller for me. Microsoft has ridiculous controllers that are annoying as hell, especially when you have small hands. I have smaller controllers for my 360 but I still hate the design. Sony's controllers fit perfectly well in my hands.

I bought my PS3 when it first came out and I play it practically to death. I have hardly had to do any updates at all. In the last year I probably had to do two or three updates. I play my PS3 pretty much daily so that's a good number.

Achievments are garbage. I'd rather get a trophy than some lame achievment worth lame points. Getting a trophy gives me more motivation to have fun with the challenges to get those trophies. Also, some previous games that didn't have trophies ended up having them added on (like Need for Speed: Undercover) and they were retroactive so instead of having to play it all over again, I just popped in my disk and listened for that wonderful trophy sound go on for a good 5 minutes. I believe that, as of January 2009, almost every single game that comes out has trophies.

Never had a problem with PSN. It has always run smoothly for me. PSHome is also a pretty cool feature, when you just want to kick back and meet up with some fellow gamers.

It's not a console war because console wars are stupid but every console has it's fair share of pros and cons. It also has to do with personal taste. I find that PS3 has far better games out there than any other console. If you don't think so, perhaps you are playing the wrong games.

I love my PS3 and I still think it's one of the best purchases I've ever made.

I own both a PS3 and a Nintendo Wii and the Wii just sits there gathering dust, this is something that has surprised me as back in the NES/SNES era I was a total Nintendo fanboy, but the Wii just leaves me cold (it's telling that on the rare times I do play it it's only for the virtual console games).

I've never owned a 360 and have no real desire to do so. I work in retail and have seen many 360s come back faulty due to them being unreliable (be it the RROD or mechanical breakdown).

The 360s were so bad that our company kept changing its returns policy on the console (it went from "customer contact Microsoft for repair" to "exchange and return" and back to "Microsoft to repair" again) and one lady was so annoyed that it had to go away for repair that she was in the store for over an hour arguing with the Microsoft call centre rep on the phone.
Since launch I can count on one hand the number of PS3s that have come back faulty and while I realize that because 360s have sold more that the returns rate would obviously be higher it is an extremely rare ocurrance that a PS3 comes back to us faulty.

As for exclusive titles, that does not bother me. Ever since Resi 4 on the GC I've taken the word "excusive" with a pinch of salt when it comes to third party titles.

The PS3 is a great piece of hardware and I've enjoyed it as both a console and a DVD/BD player and I have not had a single problem with it

It is definately worth owning providing it has the features that you are looking for but like others have said hold back and see how the slim line consoles pan out especially if it means a reduction in the price of the original units.

I just wanted to post a short reply to Yoda.

I personally like the sixaxis/DS3 controller. And I really don't have a problem with the analog sticks, I actually prefer the way they're on the DS3 compared to the 360 controller. But this is just my personal preference.

If you use PS3 Media Server to stream your files it'll automatically mux MKV to MP4 (same codec, different container) so it'll play just fine on the PS3. I use this feature every day.

I don't really see a big difference between Trophies and Achievements. I do admit that the fact that the PS3 didn't have them at launch sucks, but now they're mandatory for all new games.

I game online quite a bit (NHL 3 on 3 Arcade, Wipeout HD, Burnout Paradise, Battlefield 1943) and I don't have any problems with the PSN. I don't have a problem with the layout of the PSN store and there's a bunch of good games you can buy from it.

For my tastes (I don't care about Halo 3 or Gears of War for instance) the PS3 has a ton of awesome exclusives: Valkyria Chronicles, Uncharted, Wipeout HD, Ratchet & Clank, MGS4...

While I do admit that there were quite a few firmware updates a couple of years ago, they've been few and far between lately. I think I've had to do two updates so far this year.

I think Yoda left out the part where his 360 blows him.

I'm perfectly fine with either the PS3 or the 360 controller, but I like the PS3 controller more for sports games. Some people say it's better for fighting games too.

There are plenty of things that are exclusive. And yes lots of third party exclusives end up only being timed exclusives. But Resistance is exclusive to PS3, Gears of War is exclusive to Xbox, stuff like that isn't going to change, and is relevant to the discussion.

I don't exactly have giant hands. Despite being smaller controllers, the thumbsticks are still more of a reach for me on the PS3, because they were never designed with thumbsticks in mind in the first place. I don't see how people would prefer the dualshock design unless they have been using it from way back in the PS2 or PS1 days, because it just isn't that well designed!

The original Xbox controllers were a bit too big, the type S was better, and the Xbox 360 is best of all IMO.

You have a terrible memory or you are a liar, take your pick:

Trophies ARE achievements. There's very little that's different between the two. Not sure why you would like one and dislike another.

I honestly didn't think that ANYBODY liked home :guffaw:

How does PS3 have the best games of the consoles if exclusives are a myth?

I'd looked into that before, and judging from the changelog it's getting better, but it really didn't work well a year ago or so when I was trying that sort of thing. Subtitles were a no-go, I'm pretty sure I couldn't get DTS sound to work properly, and it would try to transcode stuff that it shouldn't have to. My computer isn't really up to transcoding HD stuff. I guess it's cool that that stuff is getting better though.

The d-pad on the 360 is pretty shoddy, so I can imagine that the PS3 controller is better for that stuff.

Exclusives are probably one of the single most important things about purchasing a new console for most people. It comes down to this, both consoles have a list of games that appear on both systems so that is a wash. What do you use to decide which console to get? If you plan on using it for gaming it simply comes down to exclusives. If console X has a bunch of cool games that you cant get on console Y then console X wins. That will be the console you want to get

The achievments and trophies for nearly all multiplatform games are the same  The only difference is that more Xbox games support it than PS3 games, since the Xbox has had the feature longer

This isn't completely true. It depends on the file. Anime viewers (such as my self) will almost always get a "file can not be read" error because of the nature of how they encode it into MKV. As a matter of fact, even with .avi I have plenty of files that won't play. The problem is that you can't install codecs and the like into your PS3 so there are many files that won't work even if they are supported

took em long enough :p I'm still disappointed though that the two games that I care about, MGS4 and Valkyria Chronicles, don't have the feature

And once again another threads descends into a pointless 360/PS3 wang rubbing contest.

I don't even know why people are even bring the 360 up in this discussion, it was not in the OP question and had nothing to do with the topic.

No one I know cares about achievement points. Obviously there are the achievement point whores out there. It's a cheap gimmick to get people to play a game longer (or to boast how much time you spend in a room without girls), but since it works, the PS3 had to add trophies. It's sort of like how the 360 lovers were laughing at the idea of Wii avatars, but are now wetting themselves over 360 avatars.

Thats what I love about the gaming industry. It's essentially a circle jerk of theft :p

Meh, it's relevant since the OP was asking if the PS3 is worth it. My answer is no, because there's a better and cheaper alternative :)

Achievement points can be fun. For instance, I never would've tried to go through Dead Rising saving as many survivors as possible if not for the Saint achievement. It was a fun and rewarding challenge that I probably wouldn't have undertaken without the achievement. Lots of a achievements are crap though, and people who achievement whore just to watch the number go up are pretty pathetic.

Miis and 360 avatars are completely useless to me. Though the girls who are in fact in the room while I try to get achievement points can play with that shit for hours :guffaw:

Do you know anyone who is so fanatical about his or her political beliefs that they can basically list it as their religion? On this board there are a few 360 owners who are like that.

You know what else we have on this board? A guy who spends hours a week compiling photos for 'genre babes', a clear sign of having poor contact with the opposite sex in real life, and then calls other people girl-starved

Did I say you were girl-starved? Or does that term automatically get to you?

I guess it's a good thing you've stayed far away from those "genre babe" threads without ever having posted in them or even clicked on them, otherwise you'd come across very poorly.

They're good for a laugh, so long as they're there. I got the feeling the comment was directed mostly at me, but maybe I misinterpreted.

No.

However I don't think any of this generation of consoles are worth it. The PS3 plays movies and the games are still second. Xbox most likely will have a rin of death, but that's OK all they have are sports and shooting games. The Wii had the most ptomise, but Nintendo is blowing it by not actually doing anythnig new, and the console is hugely overpriced.

I clearly stated that I enjoy all of my consoles for different reasons yet it seems you took it as a stab towards the X-Box. I also CLEARLY stated that, regarding my comments, this isn't a console war because that shit is incredibly stupid.

OMG YOU CALLED ME A LIAR. Rude. Two or three times wasn't a definate answer but it has most certainly been an EXTREMELY rare occurance for me. Maybe I'm lucky? I don't know but I hardly ever have to update.

For your answer about PS3 having better games, maybe you don't own a wii but I have PS3 games that aren't available on the wii. There are also a few PS3 games that haven't jumped consoles yet. I said that eventually, almost every game ends up on another console. It might not be today, it might not be tomorrow, but a ton of games find their way onto other consoles.
