At my former place of work I also lived on site. Due to abrupt circumstances, I left some items of mine in my former residence.

I have asked access to not only retrieve what is mine but also assess what else might still be "lying around", but to no avail.

Knowing that my property is still there, I ask: Do I have a right to turn up and demand (with back up if necessary) to enter and attain my property even if it did necessitate me - incidentally - sifting through some of their's?

Contact the police/sheriff's department. They may be able to have an officer escort you, also your state may have a law similar to the Theft by Conversion Law here. Basically it says if you let someone borrow/use/or leave property at someone's home/business/etc. They have to return it to you when asked in a reasonable time. If not they can be charged with the theft by keeping it, depending on the value it can be a misdemeanor or felony depending on the value of the item.

It's your property, you very much have the right to retrieve it (unless you've left it abandoned/not tried to get it for a certain period of time usually a month.)

If they won't let you go to get it, yeah, you need to get a local police officer or a lawyer or someone to help you get there. Depending on the scruples of these people, however it's possible your stuff is gone. I've seen it happen with abandoned apartments that got too far delinquent in rent payments leading to all of the person's stuff pretty much being piled in the parking lot and, well, it didn't stick around long.
