In the later half of 2283 the u.s.s Philadelphia was originally to be built as a standard constitution class starship, but half way through her build Starfleet gave her to Starfleet’s experimental engineering works at leeding engineering who were working on the transwarp project. She was extensively modified as it was assumed the standard configuration of the constitution class would not stand up to the stresses involved with Transwarp speeds.
The first thing done was the lowering of the engine nacelles, the pylons were cut in length by 45%, also her newly designed primary hull was lowered by the same amount. This cut out the relatively fragile neck pylon.
The major design was the primary hull which was intended for the never built star storm class starship. This was modified by adding an extra deflector in the forward section of the primary hull. This was deemed necessary as if the main one failed the back up would kick in also more sensors were fitted to help better understand Transwarp space.
New nacelles were built by Leeding engines corporation all this turned the Philadelphia into a new sleeker ship.
However unknown to the general population a disaster occurred that scrapped any further work on the transwarp project.
In 2285 the u.s.s excelsior was ready for trials with the u.s.s Philadelphia being a few weeks away from completion. However the excelsior had a abortive attempt to stop the theft of the u.s.s enterprise and was towed back to space dock after a complete system failure.
The people at Leeding were secretly delighted as the repairs on the excelsior would take weeks, they told Starfleet the Philadelphia would be ready before the excelsior thus the Philadelphia was the first ship to be used as a test bed for the transwarp project.
And so the u.s.s Philadelphia was launched 3 weeks after the excelsior was towed into space dock, the Excelsior trials were delayed by several problems with her systems. The Philadelphia was escorted by two Chandley class frigates and followed by the Oberth class scout the Daniel Jackson to collect data on the tests.
When they reached the test sight the escorts and scout with drew to a safe distance. Then the Philadelphia went into warp the data being automatically relayed to the Daniel Jackson, all seemed well with the designers of the ship thinking this may be a new class of ship to better the constitutions which were beginning to show their age. However they were dismayed as the Philadelphia went into transwarp for only a few moments before returning to normal space. They asked the captain what was wrong he reported that several of the crew were feeling ill but agreed to continue the test. The Philadelphia, after a few rewritten sub commands went into warp all contact was lost briefly the ship was found 12 hours later, the 1st officer reporting that most of the crew were very ill with nausea the escorts came along side to get the crew off as some strange readings were emanating from the ship as the first transporter was activated the Philadelphia disappeared with out warning only to suddenly reappear but a faint glowing was coming from the ship the escorts backed off as the Daniel Jackson reported strange subspace readings from the Philadelphia. However the captain of the frigate admiral Blake wasn’t going to leave the Philadelphia crew in trouble so he went back to help but the Philadelphia disappeared again crippling the Blake with a energy surge.
The Philadelphia was never seen again despite an extensive search for her, so on October 26th 2285 she and her crew were declared missing cause unknown, the press and relatives of the crew were not told about the tests. But a strange phenomenon occurred various people reported garbled messages claiming to be from the Philadelphia, Starfleet dismissed the reports as rumours until a couple of Starfleet captains travelling in the area also reported the same messages it was as though the Philadelphia was a extremely long way. The whole thing was hushed up until 2355 when reports started coming in about a Starfleet vessel near the old test site. Starfleet checked the reports and found nothing then a few messages came through claiming to be from the Philadelphia again these were ignored as a hoax, Starfleet had no ship called the Philadelphia but the reports were also coming in from Starfleet captains travelling through the area. Starfleet checked back and found that 70 years ago similar messages were reported. By this time Starfleet had the ships to triangulate where the signals were coming from better they sent a ship to investigate. The captain of the ship sent reported nothing was at the coordinates and set course for home which was a three month trip away suddenly his main power failed as his ships auxiliary power came on they found a Starfleet ship that was unlike anything he had seen before however the ship failed to respond and the sensors could not pinpoint it exactly for a beam over then the ship disappeared. after searching through Starfleet records the high command found it was the Philadelphia or a ship close to its configuration they are still at a loss as to what it was to this day.
