My One Question about STXI

Soran did it. The Romulans were caught entirely unprepared for the return of so prosaic a villain.

Betelgeuse will NOT do this. In fact there's a chance that the star may have already gone nova we just won't know about it because we see it like it was about 650 years ago.

Schaefer said that even if Betelgeuse became a supernova, it would be too far away to do us any actual harm.

Well, "will not" is a bit of a strech. Maybe, "may not."

I wonder why there is such a debate on this. Even the page you linked mentions that there is much debate as to the harm a supernova could do. Michio Kaku was on a program not too long ago talking about supernovae/gamma ray bursts and he talks about a minimum safe distance being at a thousand (or so) lightyears. Then you have various other scientists saying that a hundred or so would be fine.

I have now read Countdown, a most enjoyable read and well worth the inflated price I paid in this country. Nero's life being seared away from him and his emergence as a force of only vengeance was very well done. His insanity is clear when you see him kill other Romulans, aren't enough of them dead?!

And the whole nova thing was good, it showed how scientists disagreed and bickered over the data.

So, I'm happy, LOL

Now I'm scared that there'll be a supernova nearby and we'll all die! How will I ever sleep at night!

I also plan to read Countdown sometime. Is it sold in bookstores?

^^ We got ours in a Barnes & Noble about two weeks before the movie came out. I think they should still have them.

teacake, glad to hear it!
