My newfound appreciation for "Duet"

The Transformed Man

Commander
Red Shirt
I've always been a DS9 and it's probably my 2nd favorite series. I always enjoyed the episode "Duet" and felt it was one of DS9's better episodes.

I probably have not watched the show in steady doses for a few years so I thought a new DS9 marathon was in order. So I began watching again, but then something funny happened. I got to "Duet" and I just can't stop watching the episode.

The storyline is brilliant, the script fantastic... I have to imagine given the subject matter as an allegory to Nazi atrocities and Israel's hunt for Nazi war criminals post-WWII that the set was particularly emotionally charged.

What stands out in particular with Duet however are the performances... nothing short of master work. Nana Visitor is outstanding in this episode, but Harris Yulin is simply mesmerizing.

My opinion on this episode has changed, "Duet" is not simply one of DS9's better moments... it's one of Trek's.

I'm with you on this one! :techman: This episode was a turning point for Kira with the very last scene. Then "Second Skin" really took Kira to a new place. Love Kira so much!

This is what Trek should be all about, an intelligent, emotive story that deals with real world issues in a sci-fi context. It was a turning point for the series as a whole and Kira in particular, all without a single phaser being fired.

If people ever ask about why DS9 is so great have them watch "Duet". If they still don't get it then there's no hope for them :)

"Duet" has always been one of my favourites, as well. A very strong episode, in its own right and a really great Kira story, besides.

One of my all-time favourites too! As has already been said, the acting is simply outstanding on this one; as is the writing.
Actually, I find that those episodes that put two strong actors together and just let them ping off each other are consistently among the best and most captivating to watch. I'm thinking here for instance of "The Wire" (Bashir and Garak), "Waltz" (Sisko and Dukat)... those are gold standard quality.
I also rather enjoyed "The Ascent" (Quark and Odo), though compared to the other three that's a bit less "heavyweight" and has more of a touch of humour. But you get two really good actors enjoying themselves on that.

The irony is that "Gul Darhe'el" orignally appeared to be a pretty hammy Cardassian. And then it turned it out that the Marritza character was hamming it up on purpose in order to portray a sterotypical Cardassian. ;)
