My New Opinion of Nemesis

USS Valkyrie

Commander
Red Shirt
After watching the interviews and seeing what exactly Nemesis was actually about, I must conclude that I really like this movie....ALOT. The action sequences were fantastic, the redesigned Enterprise E was fantastic and the whole idea of change was just fantastically executed. I am saddened that the trilogy won't be completed.

Nice to hear some positive. I, too, liked some of the themes of change. I loved Picard dealing with his mid-life crisis, and watching his "children" moving on and growing, while he stayed the same.

There was lots of good in Nemesis, but some things (the obvious violation of the prime directive, the positronic signature, and Worf's character) just did not make sense.

I honestly try to come up with positive things to say about the movie - But even the core concept wasn't any good, as I can say about Ent or Voy. The actual original idea sucked and the movie was pretty much doomed from then on.
Picard's mid-life crisis - Not only was this a rehash of The Wrath of Kahn with Kirk feeling old, it's already been done for Picard too - 'time is the fire in which we burn' ring any bells?
B4 - Been done, both the concept of a second Data ('Datalore', 'Brothers' etc) and the 'finding mysterious data parts' ('Times Arrow'). Plus the character was annoying as hell and just a way to completely undo the only significant event in the film:
The Death of Data, which in itself was just more 'TWOK' rehashing. The non-human character takes on a suicide mission to save his crippled ship from the villain's (who has a personal vendetta against the captain) superweapon. Before he dies he has a chance to say a last goodbye to his captain.
Shinzon - An attempt to rehash Khan, with a brain-numbingly nonsensical backstory, and only the barest resemblance to Patrick Stewart.

I could go on.

The only good idea in the film was the whole Romulan/Reman thing and that never passed a paragraph of exposition in terms of depth. I'm truly sorry to derail your positive attitude, but more so than anything else in the franchise I find it very hard to find any redeeming features in this film.

Sorry, but while I don't outright hate NEM, I found it boring and derivative, with just enough consistancy errors to make me question wtf they thought they were doing.

And this was several years before I became a message board nerd, so I went into the movie basically unspoiled. It was just as lame that way, unfortunately.

THE GOOD:
-The effects seemed to be top notch.
-There were a few nice moments during the wedding.
-The music is pretty good.
-The flash-back is interesting.
-The new locations on the ENT-E were interesting from a fanboy pov.

THE BAD:
-Everything else.

I agree it was a disapointment. What's really sad is the potential was there, IMHO. Still, I can't get beyond the cold, hard fact that while watching it, I enjoyed it, many flaws and all.

I cant wait for the next movie to come out so we can stop bashing Nemesis (not that its not deserved). Could you imagine if the internet and message boards existed when Final Frontier came out? We'd be up all night bashing that one.

Anyway, when I walked out of the theater I actually liked Nemesis. My ex-wife, who was not a trek or sci-fi fan by any means, went with me, and she actually cried when Data died (she was familiar with the characters). It was after reading all the reviews that I started analyzing it differently.

I have to say that sometimes you just have to take all of this for what it is -- entertainment. Dont get me wrong, I love trek, have since about 1980. I analyze every aspect of it too. Sometimes you're gonna like it, sometimes you wont. There are so many things I cant stand about TFF and Insurrection. But I still love them because they are trek, and there are many things that I do like. So I forgive the bad and embrace the good. Thats how I look at Nemesis.

It cracks me up when I hear someone say that they hated Nemesis so much that they'll never watch it again. Dont watch it if you didnt like it as a film -- dont not watch it because you feel betrayed by the producers because the uniforms were not right or some other silly reason.

Well, I liked the "beat" music they played when the weapon was first unveiled in the Romulan council chambers. It was somewhat downhill from there.

Aren't we now?

It seems to me the vast number of complaints about Nemesis have been pretty well grounded. I think ``prime directive'' concerns are overblown, but otherwise, I can't think of other commonly made complaints that are silly.

But even if you do watch it as a stand-alone film not related to the Star Trek Universe, it's still full of stupidly huge contradictions and inconsistencies.

I don't care...I still like it. Not my fave, (far from it) but enjoyable enough.

I used to severely dislike Nemesis but my opinion has changed over the years. What I look at is that they tried damned hard to make a fantastic movie, and if it wasn't for the fact of a hopeless director and Data's pointless death it would have been up there with First Contact.

It was ok, but I felt like I had too much nit-pickery in me to actual enjoy it. Things like a Bald Picard at the Academy (huh???), yet another Soong-type android bandying about, and the whole off-road vehicle thing made little sense to me.

The exterior space visuals are impressive, but the artificial extension of the corridors aboard the Scimitar is pretty shitty, as is the Scimitar shuttlebay.

I did like some aspects, like the last scene between Geordi and Data and the end part where the crew reminise about Data. I also didn't think the Remans were that bad, nor was the idea of Romulans cloning Starfleet personnel.

That's cool that you are liking Nemesis....but I'm confused.

What trilogy?

Why, you know, ST Looking for Data, and The Journey Back to our House.

(I kid, I kid! :p)

I loved TNG and as a loyal fan this movie really disappointed me. BUT to keep in theme with the OP there were some elements I did like.

The Romulan Capitol city was beautifully redone from the matte paintings seen in TNG.

The Romulan Senate was a very beautiful set I thought, more detailed and rich than what I had become used to in Trek.

The Valdore class warbird was a striking beauty, very elegant and bird like.

Well now that im writing about the good it seems all I really enjoyed was the set design... lol

While its nowhere near a classic Trek flick...Nemesis does have its moments while few and far between. I don't like the fact that it seems just a rehash of TWOK but executed very poorly. This should've been about the conflict between Romulans and the Federation...instead we barely get any Romulans and learn the Remans are vampire wannabes...where's Captain Buffy and Commander Willow when you need them?

I like to hear positive with Nemesis too. :) :)

I am indebted to the makers of ST:Nemesis for starting me on the road of realization that the TNG era was one huge snoozefest. Watched it and thought, "why am I trying so hard to like this shit?"

I see Nemesis a missed oppurtinity. That was inevitable , they would falter somewhere considering this was a 15 year franchise and ideas run out at a certain point. That's why I always think that a show no matter how good it is should be ended 6th or 7th season. After a certain point you began to repreat yourself and audience realises that. Also if you change the tone , not everybody handles change well in their favorite show.

That aside Nemesis was not as bad as reviwers made to. It had good shining points. For example Tom Hardy showed a great performance as personal adversary to Picard. Scimitar was a good idea as uber powerful warbird. Data's goodbye to B4 and later to whole crew were good emotional moments. So was Riker/Troi wedding.

The problem was repreatitive aspects : personal adversary/big space battle theme was used before ( and right now it has been used so much in other shows , that theme became a dead horse ) The car chase on Kolarus was unnecessary. And idea of B4 however created good emotional moments , was used before as Lore several times in TNG. With last TNG movie you expect something special and original. There was few. So for me Nemesis was not a bad movie but it is not a special one as it should be like The Undiscovered Country or First
