My movie pov

I prefer the Series to the movies.
Still I love TWOK.

I'd have like Kirk's fate to be an elder statesman sort of Captain like Pike in ST09 not washed-up like he was in TWOK and TMP.
And I'd like to have seen Data go on forever commenting to new crews on the good old days back on Enterprise-D.

And I'm not sure we'd have as much of a Star Trek fan community if it wasn't for the movies.

I'm the other way round I prefer the movies to the series, well TOS anyway

These are all very good points.
I agree with Kirk , sort of sad he wasn't an elder statesman. I hadn't thought of that before, but I now am in total agreement with your position.

And I also hadn't thought of the community aspect. Although, wouldn't you say that the next generation tv run probably did more for the fan base than the movies? Tng movies were almost universally bad. (my opinion)

I'm happy with the movies as they were. Warts and all. Characters in their places, actors doing what they did. If I had any suggestion it would be to not embrace comedy so much after TVH. It took the edge off two very strong storylines afterward and made the characters too lightweight. The first three movies were the most "mature." If you really go through TFF and TUC, you'll notice just as many jokes and goofiness in 6 as in 5. I missed the dead seriousness of the first three. Aside from that, I pretty much loved all 10 classic and TNG films. I also liked the nuTreks, just on a different level.

You're right, there probably was as many gags in 6 as 5, maybe even more, it get's a pass because it was generally more subtle and better written for the characters, it didn't stick out like the Scotty head bump but flowed into the story better

It didn't bother me that they retconned him, but the TNG version of the character just didn't make any sense: in order to make big bucks he decided to become... a physicist? (Or whatever the hell he was.)

I figured he may have been a physicist prior to World War III, that experience changed him and he decided he needed to take care of himself however he could and he had an idea.

He was a scientist, was shattered emotionally by the war, tried to create warp drive for profit to escape Montana, met the Vulcans and realized why he became a scientist to begin with.
