My movie pov

PCz911

Captain
Captain
Ok, I know I'm going to regret this...but....

I can't stand the movies after wrath of khan.

The uniforms start to grate on me, the characters age (ok, don't we all) but they dont grow, the plots cause my head to hurt and ..and... Don't EVEN get me started on tng movies. They hurt every part of my body.

I want so to like them, but I can't. And I haven't watched any of tng DVD's since I bought them.

Yes, it's a personal opinion, but there.. I said it.

I don't have any of the TOS and TNG films on DVD. I used to have most of them on videotape, but most of those were stolen by a thief. I'm in no rush to add them to the library, though I sometimes consider it if special features interest me. Haven't bitten yet, more interested in getting another copy of The Fifth Element, since mine has only the film and no features.

Did you feel this way before you bought the discs?
I have them all and still watch them from time to time. With TOS, I like them all to one degree or another. With TNG, it's pretty much the same but the degrees are lower.

Buying the DVD's were some OCD issue I had about ensuring I had a complete ST collection. But I can't say that they're good. In fact, some of the movies just down right depress me. When they totally changed the cochrane character it just drove me nuts since metamorphosis was one of my favorite episodes.

Did he later return TFF?

It didn't bother me that they retconned him, but the TNG version of the character just didn't make any sense: in order to make big bucks he decided to become... a physicist? (Or whatever the hell he was.)

Interesting sentiments. And, I can understand where you're coming from.

Only two I own are TPM and TWOK. For the rest, I don't know about "can't stand" them, there are a lot of charming moments here and there -- in "the one with the whales" especially -- but the big screen franchise really surrenders to sentimentalism after TWOK. There are none of the original cast movies after TWOK that are really essential viewing or must-own for me.

The TNG movies regrettably didn't build on the strengths of their cast and characters. Probably the only one of those I'd consider owning would be First Contact, which was easily the best out of the bunch.

Well, ok. You are entitled to your opinion. But most of the things in your list of gripes are really superficial and unspecific, like the uniforms. As you said, the characters age because, well, the actors age. I'd argue that several characters did indeed "grow" in some way, but you really need to be more specific as to just what you were looking for them to do. And why do the plots cause your head to hurt?

I can see where PCz911 comes from, I really can. TSFS was a fairly solid movie with some great moments, TVH is such a departure from the series that I almost discount it from the running, as it stands, despite it being the third movie in a mini trilogy it's a good comedy adventure no more IMO. The great character moments and score in TFF for me are not enough to save it from being the weakest in the entire series for me, so that just leaves TUC, which I consider to be an excellent entry, second only to TWOK.

So the original post has some merit, as to some eyes I reckon the TOS movies can come across as inconsistent and patchy, and to a degree they are.

They have a charm and heart that is mainly absent from the TNG movies though, and that's what get's them a pass from this 40 year old fan.

...swear to OCCULUS I need new glasses...I read the title of this thread as "My Movie Porn"...

...did not know I could type that fast...

To me, movies II-V are the heart of Star Trek. When Trek's best characters were at their best.

Totally agree - when I watch TOS now Kirk comes across as a bit of a tosser, whereas he mellows in the movies into a much more likeable character

I would add VI to this as well. The story idea was certainly timely and I thought that it was an excellent transitional film - both for the characters and for the Star Trek universe where we knew that some sort of bridge to the Klingons would have to be built.

Well, I'm the same way. I saw them all in the theater up to "Generations," but TMP and TWOK are the only two I've re-watched in probably 20 years.

The first two movies seemed innovative, purposeful, earnest and consequential. The rest seemed passive, complacent and formulaic, checking off boxes for action bits, jokes and character moments.

But I can't think of any series that I've really liked past two movies. I find I place a lot of value on the creative energy that comes from early endeavors; I rarely like a band's albums after the first four, TV series are really good up to about four or five seasons and so on. Also, as far as I am concerned characters that originate on TV are never better-served in movies, and Trek is no exception.

It's hard to argue against your points, I'll concede a good chunk of it is nostalgia, a love of characters you've known for a long time and just flat out fandom. Great analogies with TV series bands etc by the way.

I prefer the Series to the movies.
Still I love TWOK.

I'd have like Kirk's fate to be an elder statesman sort of Captain like Pike in ST09 not washed-up like he was in TWOK and TMP.
And I'd like to have seen Data go on forever commenting to new crews on the good old days back on Enterprise-D.

And I'm not sure we'd have as much of a Star Trek fan community if it wasn't for the movies.
