My Little Pony web invasion?

Calm down dude, no one's getting banned and the administrati actually do a good job here on the whole. There are going to be disagreements from time to time, but we're all still friends.

What gets me is the excessive hate on display.

I know, I thought I was honestly over it after the Ponygate thing. But after Shrans hiccup in the bomb thread and several of the posts here, particularly the "hurry up and die" ones, I see the hate isn't going to die down anytime soon.

Its sickening, people I thought I knew are calling me "gay", "closet woman" as slurs, as if either is anything wrong with them, and most annoyingly of all "pedophile" and meaning it.

And now very thinly veiled insinuations we should die, be killed, be locked away, over liking a tv show. This board exists entirely because of fanaticism to an old 60's scifi show thats been off the air for over 40 years, everyone here has received ridicule for liking the show to be the point of extreme ire and bullying from non-fans, insinuations of homosexuality and pedophilia thrown around by them too.

I thought if anyone honestly knew what it was like being an emerging fandom liking an odd show it would be the people here, and yet this board remains the only place on the internet and my social life that judges me at all. My own family, friends, posters on other boards have all known me for years, and haven't batted an eyelid over me being a Brony. Only trekkies, and only here.

You must move in vastly different social situations from me, if I mentioned to my friends that I was spending my days watching MLP, I would not get that reaction*, betting on ponies - fine, watching cartoon ponies - no.

is there no way you could bet on My Little Pony?

i don't care what people like, i just hate the fuckers who ram it down my throat and hijack unrelated threads to post more of their stupid crap.

and i don't think they're gay, peados, rapists or anything of that ilk, i just think they're annoying as hell.

Yes, we all hate Firefly, but talking about how annoying the fans are just gives us more irritating Firefly talk. Discretion is the better part of valor, here.

Hum... that's a good question - I suppose if there are any horses running that are named after the MLP ponies you might be able to do it?

I'll check my Racing Post and get back to you.

Agreed. Very good point.

Still, I do think some MLP fans specifically set out to get a reaction (I would put it akin to trolling), and then run with the hurt victim thing afterwards - a type of attention seeking. It's making it a very tiresome topic for those of us who don't give a damn what people watch in the privacy of their homes.

I say, give them an MLP sub forum and be done with it. That way, those of us who aren't interested in seeing it across the board don't have to deal with it anymore. Let them post all they want there till the cows come home.

Hell, this could be the new invigoration of the site you've been wanting...

Believe it or not, on a Rush board I frequent, there is a My Little Pony thread that is 19 pages long.

Oh man. A thread where people discuss a thing they enjoy has a lot of pages. How horrible for you.

I never said anything about it being "horrible" for me.

I don't think it's horrible, just incredibly stupid.

Seriously, T'Bonz, did you ever think at your age you would have to get seriously involved in a dispute over cartoon ponies? That you would actually have to write the sentences you just wrote?

In fact, this whole thread is so ridiculous, I can barely believe I'm reading it.

You left out LAME, which co-incidently suggests it should get put out of its misery. There... everyone wins :)

Hm. I feel that posts like this aren't really helpful. Hate is such a strong word, all that was on display here would be better described as hostility.
Also, on the net people post things they wouldn't say in real life like that and I think captcalhoun's comment is such a case. He later elaborated which should make it clear that he doesn't really want any Bronies to die. It's just an expression, albeit a needlessly inflammatory one.

Where did that happen? From the rest of your post I'm assuming it happened on this board. Did you notify on these posts or PMs? It's hard to evaluate such incidents after the fact without seeing the posts/PMs in question.

I understand the pain and the bitterness - really, I do, I felt pretty crappy due to Ponygate for a few days, too - but I don't think that vague, yet very grave accusations will do any good, especially if the goal is to resolve the situation some day.

Well, I'm glad your experience on other boards was positive, and I wouldn't expect anything else from my family and friends.
However, from the anecdotes here and on various Brony sites we both frequent it's clear that there were rather hostile reactions elsewhere on the net, often a lot more hostile than here, and even in real life, sadly enough. (I'm referring to the story of the teenage Brony who was kicked out of his home by his mother.)
Yes, the reaction here was partially hostile (let's not forget that quite a number of posters here decided to check out the show and came to like it, too) but some of us also overdid it with the threadbombs. I don't like being called creepy or a sheep or whatever over liking a TV show, either, but I also think that generally, calling what happened here bullying is unwarranted.

If I had a racing horse I'd totally give it a MLP name.

It's equally ridiculous to be in charge of a Star Trek forum, but hey, let's ignore that. Some of the condescension in this thread is unbelievable.

Agreed.

I write fan fiction, for crying out loud, I know I'm in no position to be superior to anyone else's hobby choices. But some of the martyrdom in this thread is equally over the top, and each side aggravates the other.

A little stepping back and taking a deep breath would serve everyone well.

Calling a spade a spade is neither condescension nor martyrdom, neither is it getting overly worked up. In fact, just a few posts up, I think Digits and Spocked are keeping a pretty good humour actually! Unlike many who are practically putting on the waterworks and turning the emotional thumb screws. It's like being in a twilight zone here sometimes, everything is upside down! Let's call a spade a spade. Some of us are on the geeky side of the spectrum, others more towards the creepy end. Fact. If you're not creeped out - good for you. Those who are, are perfectly entitled to their feelings.

It's worth re-examining those feelings. One of the best things about TBBS (and other online forums) is that people are generally less judgmental of more fringe interests. You like to dress up as a character from a show I've never heard of? Great. You like to argue about the design of a fictional ship that will never exist? Okay. It's all good.

Who are any of us to dictate what's creepy or unacceptable, and what's not? Yeah, of course people are entitled to their opinions. But can you imagine what this place would be like if we all looked down on each other for every interest we didn't share?

If that's the environment you're going for, I suppose that's your choice. Personally I think life's a lot richer when we accept that people are going to have interests that we don't understand or agree with.

If I had a racing horse I'd totally give it a MLP name.

Heh, I think they have excellent racing horse names - Twilight Sparkle, Derpy Hooves, Rainbow Dash, Princess Celestia; they are practically made for that. :)

And I pity all the haters here. How empty and joyless your lives must be to get that worked up about other people enjoying a show that literally couldn't be more harmless. In a way it's funny, but it's also sad.

Actually as much as I love Derpy, probably not the best name to give a real racehorse, it doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

Rainbow Dash is a great name for a racing horse, though. Fluttershy, too, I think.

Would be ironic in a humorous way though if it's a fast horse. And maybe it would increase your earnings by manipulating the odds by tricking people into thinking the horse is clumsy. ;)

I did think of that, create long odds and make a fortune on a fast horse but still, Dash sounds better.
