My leap into 21st century television

Ben Sisko

Lieutenant Junior Grade
So I came into 1,000 and plan to buy a new tv. My livinig room won't be conducive to larger than a 50 inch. i'm thinking 47 or 46.

Should I do LCD or LED? And I'm pretty sure I want 120hz.
I have no idea about tvs. what should I do?

LED is LCD. LED just pertains to the type of backlighting that the LCD screen uses. I think your real question there should have been LCD vs Plasma. Both have their benefits and drawbacks, the best thing to do is go to a store and compare them.

Yes, you do want 120hz. A faster refresh rate is always better.

Thanks for your help. is the diffrence between 60 and 120 hz that ethereal real-life image quality i see? That's what i really want.

Well there is always 300Hz, which has the added advatnage of being the first common denominator of the PAL 50Hz and the NTSC 60Hz refresh rates.

Yeah, we just had a thread on this, can dig through that as well. Essentially, just go look and see what you like.

Panasonic is best brand for Plasma, Samsung for LCD/LED.

After that, see what you like. Is the room dark, or in direct sunlight? Plasma, and some LCD tvs, will be a little more reflective, whereas other LCD and LED tvs will be matte like your computer monitor, so won't reflect the light. What are you going to hook up to this? HD feeds, blu-ray, etc, or a lot of standard-def programing?

IMO, just go buy the best 46" Samsung LED tv you can fit into your budget. Should be able to find a deal on one with a decent features list, and 120Hz, at about that price point.

Assuming you haven't made your purchase yet, all I can offer is that no matter what you do, buy a Samsung. IMO they have the best picture quality, and I offered the same advice to my dad, and he ended up buying a Samsung, and loves the picture quality. Since seeing his set, my uncle and my dad's friend have both bought identical Samsung sets to my dad's. Of course, this is only my own opinion and advice.

Ok, i got one and now i'm pissed off. bought a 46 toshiba regza 120hz. Wonderful picture, looks great. But i have an older surround sound ampliefier and the sound is 130 milliseconds delayed and my receiver doens't have the lip sync feature (my dvd player does) so the only fix i have found is putting the tv in Game Mode and reducing the picture quality to 60hz.

I dont have the $ to shell out for a new Amp with the feature i need.
my set up is as such

DVR receiver, HDMI out to TV, rca analog plugs to Amp.

Will an optical audio cable fix this?
Will running the audio from the tv to the amp and bypassing the dvr receivers sound plugs work? I've read that the HDMI is already transmitting sound from DVR to TV.

HELP

I'd buy a cheap optical cable and try connecting that from the DVR to the amp, and turn off the TV speakers. That worked for me when I had a similar receiver and an LCD HD set.

Last spring I upgraded my TV and receiver at the same time, so I could run every thing via HDMI.

Thanks I'll give it a try tonight

I've got an older a/v receiver, and did exactly that: HDMI from DVR to TV, and TOSLink audio cable from DVR to receiver. No problems with mine.

rest of my setup works the same way. Treat the TV as just a display device, and leave the audio at the receiver.

Best way of looking at it. :techman:

FIXED IT!

Ran analog cables dvr to amp, and optical aduoio from tv to amp! Picard and Riker are now synced up in First Contact!
