My Humblest Apology

Captain Zog

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Some time ago, I created a thread (one that is still running but getting to be far too long now) in which I asserted that I could barely stand the character of T'Pol. I would now like to retract that statement - or rather modify it. While it is true that I found her irritating in the first two seasons, in seasons 3 and 4 I came to like her a lot and thought the character was MUCH better handled (plus she no longer dressed like a Seven of Nine clone). My most humble apologies to T'Pol and Jolene Blalock.

:vulcan:

She's pretty frosty from the start, but once it seems clear she's enamored with the crew her frostiness is kind of endearing.

My earliest posts and online reputation/personality in the Trek BBS starting in 2001 and '02 was as a notorious Blalock/T'Pol basher. I had almost nothing good to say about either...and it wore on a lot of nerves. Eventually my own. I grew to like and appreciate both Jolene and her character more and more as the show progressed and her makeup improved. But early on I was the resident Blalock Basher in the ENT forums and had a less-than-giddy rep.

I too disliked T'Pol during much of season 1, but eventually I really came to like her. She was such an icy bitch during the early episodes and it didn't help that Jolene delivered some lines in a really awkward way.

When her makeup really improved starting in 2003 it seemed her acting got a lot better as well. I doubt both are connected too closely...but sometimes it seemed that Jolene deliberately held out until the makeup artists made her look more Vulcan before she really started to shine.

Yeah, the hair made a lot of difference! I also dislike the bland catsuit she wore in season 1, it made her look like a mannequin instead of an officer. The more colourful one from seasons 3 and 4 in combination with the new hair made her look much better!

And yeah, Jolene's acting improved tremendously.

I wasn't crazy about T'Pol in much of season 4, when I felt she became part of the background instead of a main character. I liked her as a superior, stuck up Vulcan.

I was never a fan of how her Trellium addiction was handled and then so easily cured/dropped in Season 3...I was hoping there'd be long term medical aftereffects in the final year that caused Trip and Archer to become far more concerned for her.

I liked her at the start for what she was - NOT the human on a ship full of humans - she made a pretty convenient target. Darned if she didn't become pretty endearing by season 3 and 4!

At first I thought she was only there for the decon scenes but she ended up being on of my favorite Vulcans in Star Trek. Some of the writing for her was really awful but some was really great.
