My HP Laptop Cursor Jumps All Over The Screen- Question Re "Solution"

So I have an HP laptop that is less than a year old (so it is still under warranty). My cursor jumps around the screen at various times of the day when I don't want it to. I don't have a mouse plugged into the laptop so I use the touchpad. I know 100% for sure tha I am not accidently touching the touchpad or arrows or anything that should make the cursor move.

I contacted HP & they said to change the sensitivity of the pointer so I did... nothing happened and I still have the prob. Then HP said to reinstall the touchpad driver for my laptop so I did... nothing happened and I still have the prob.

Now HP wants me to update the BIOS version of my computer, but I haven't done it yet. I know some stuff about computers, but not everything. Someone once told me never mess with the BIOS of the computer because it is like messing with the brain of the computer. That makes me afraid to update the BIOS version of my computer. Should I trust this person at HP? They said it wouldn't make me lose anything, but I am kinda afraid. Here is the link of the page where I am supposed to do this update from (you will see a page with info and it will give you a link to download it):

Should I do it??? Will I lose any programs or files or screw up my computer? BTW, the description of the update says:

"This package contains the WinFlash Utility and a System BIOS image for the supported notebook/laptop models and operating systems. The WinFlash Utility is used to locally flash the System BIOS (ROM) on notebooks/laptops operating in a Microsoft Windows Vista Operating System environment."

No one knows anything about updating BIOS?

I've done it a few times without any disasters, i'm not going to guarantee that you won't run into any problems though.

If something interrupts the update like a power failure you could render the machine unusable requiring the bios chip to be replaced (although you wouldn't lose your files, the contents of the hard drive should remain unaffected) but as long as you follow the instructions to the letter there's no reason to think you'll have any trouble.

Indeed. Any data will remain on the harddrive. However you will have to remove the unit from the computer (usually four screws).

There are two things than can mess up a BIOS upgrade. Some sort of power failure (which is highly unlikely with a laptop because of the battery) and a faulty BIOS image (also highly unlikely if you enter the serial number of your computer on the manufacturers website.).

So all in all, you have nothing to fear. I recently updated BIOS on 470 HP Elitebook's without a hitch. All are alive and kicking.

FYI: I spend my weekdays with HP laptops (God knows I hate them. *Hugs my Zepto* ) and i can certainly tell you that you have nothing to fear.

In any case, you should always make backups of your important stuff so that it will be safe no matter what.
