Actually, they did get to the moon, they just didn't *land*.

Kind of like Apollo 8. They went there, orbited, and came back. Only difference is, 8 was never even *supposed* to land (it had no lunar module).

is the name tag on the man sitting in the middle: Ken Mattingly, though originally intended to be the Command Module pilot, didn't go up with the mission; he was grounded shortly before, after having been exposed to rubella, and was replaced by Jack Swigert.

I didn't really think you would have missed that detail. Since someone decided to raise an objection which was clearly invalid to begin with and nitpickery ensued, I thought I might as well put it out of its misery. Sorry for the fuss; I thought it was funny, both on its own and as a trope on the "No pony" one.
