Pretty much. One of my old mates once told me it's bad luck to walk across three utility pavement covers in a row, and I've kept that in mind ever since. Even though it makes absolutely no sense, I still sometimes avoid them for that specific reason, while other times I walk over them just to flaunt fate.
Have you seen Lost? There are penguins in the tropics. The white stuff you see is a beach with very white sand.
