I wanted to do a few things in my final post on this BBS.
I would like to thank all the posters which have allowed this to be a wonderful way to distract myself from the problems of the real world and to chat about trek and other "issues of the day"
There are plenty of wonderful people here, and I am grateful to have gotten to know some of you in real life, and hundreds of you online. And for the people that disagreed with me on issues, I thank you even more. I believe that we should allow minority opinions to flourish. (and my opinion was a minority opinion more often than not).
To the mods, with one obvious exception, I would like to thank you for your tireless effort to make this place a better place to post. They say that being a mod is a thankless job, so allow me to say THANK YOU to all of you.
I firmly believe that this BBS has created a two tier system of posters... the ones that are "buddy buddy" with mods that can get away with anything on the board, and the regular Joe Blow poster who actually has to follow the board rules.
I feel that the warning that was issued was based on a historical grudge against me, and despite concessions that I attacked no one, my warning for trolling was upheld. To me, that was the straw that broke the camels back.
I would like to point out that this warning is not why I am leaving, but rather the straw that broke the camels back. When I first arrived at this BBS 8 years ago (I lurked for a while
), it was a fun place interested in making this a fun place to post. Over the years, the priority seems to have changed to a stricter adherence to the rules for some posters and the fun is very much reduced. Certain posters are allowed to do virtually anything, attack anyone and everyone they like... derail threads at his/her desire and nothing is done.
In fact, I feel that I have gone out of my way to "fall into line" here. I was asked to limit the politics in the lounges... and while obviously I haven't stopped, I have minimized it. I was asked to remove my "girly avs" and did so, despite the fact that other posters have had avs that would make the ones I had look tame by comparison.
I've gotten in the mods hair plenty of times over the years for defending acts that I saw as injustices. Years ago, you could make a case and it would be considered... Now, unless it was a blatant over-reaction, nothing is considered.
I was accused of making a dual account... despite the fact that I was chatting (with a fellow poster) on the phone driving around when one post was made and buying something at the store at the point of another post. But apparently the IP address matched, so I had to be guilty. I feel that in previous years, there would have been more consideration to the fact that I was in my car when a post was made from a computer that I use(d).
I am sorry that I will not be here for the final half season of BSG. Even sorrier that I won't be here for the new Trek movie and hopefully it's sequels. However, I consider myself a practical person... and the cost/benefit of this place has created too high of a cost in my opinion.
To Spocked directly, best wishes on the continuing child custody battles with your ex. Being away from my little girl is one of the most painful things in my life and I wish it on no one.
To Elmo... I am not an evil person interested in keeping my little woman beneath me. Just so you know, I have helped more than a handul of the women in my life try to get better jobs and enter colleges/universities. I believe in making women strong and don't approve of minimizing them. I don't believe that men and women are complete equals, but I don't believe either sex is better. I have no doubt that as a woman in a field dominated by men, you had to work harder than most of the guys... I congratulate you on what you accomplished but ask you to consider that not all men have nefarious intent hidden within comments.
AnthonyF, watch the Big Bang Theory! It really is funny
To the socal group, it was a pleasure meeting all of you... especially the wonderful people that I rarely interracted with online.
I hope to continue the friendships I have developed on this bbs with other posters long after this post is done. I realize one poster will not be missed in the grand scheme of things, but I feel that minority opinions are being dismissed throughout the board... and that is not just my minority opinions.
I wish you all the best in the upcoming year and beyond. To end this in a way worthy of a trek fan, may all of you live long and prosper
