Still an interesting show that's funny. But the hefty son and is harpie wife (who seems to walk more like Asimo than a human being) need to go and if the premise of the show didn't depend on it I'd almost say the main son needs to go too. He's just not that interesting and while I think this crotchety dad character is being well done by Shatner he's pretty much carrying the entire series which cannot last long. Sooner or later the "sons" are going to need to carry some of the weight. That or, as I said up thread, Shatner needs to be just placed with a group of other old men who are varying degrees of crotchety and rational and just let the material write itself.
The latest episode I watched featured the (main) son dealing with trying to get a date and ends up dating his half-brother's boss -after a chance encounter in the office, the boss is a nutcase, he does it to ensure his half-brother and his wife get a choice client in the real-estate office. Meanwhile Ed (Shatner) befriends the half-brother's dog and shows it the kind of compassion he never showed either of his children.
Again, Shatner mostly carried the show and the humor. The sub-plot with Son A and the nutsoid S&M-crazed boss was okay if over-the-top and just poorly played by the son. The half-brother's subplot also deals with the loss of affection from his father, mostly Ed not coming over to see the new house, and his delusions of Ed ever coming over (and when he does it's to see the dog.) It was all something that had potential but these actors for the adult children just aren't very good, and their single female character (the wife of the half-brother) is a shrieking harpie. Shatner gets all of the good lines and scenes. This show, much like other sitcoms, if it gets a second season needs a tonal shift or do something to get the sons to be better characters because right now, for me, they're not working.
Shatner is carrying this entire series.
