My dad and best friend are republicans

Termites may well instinctually know about nest building, but I wouldn't assume that either. Anyway my point was that animals do indeed perform engineering feats whether they create a set of blueprints for humans to read or not.

I agree that they do. My argument was that animals don't create, design, and then build. They have no need for self improvement, and no need for spirituality. They also have no self-esteem or self-concept.

I'm not sure why I was making that point. But then, I have a cold!

Without reading their minds that's not a statement that can be made with any certainty, sorry.

Yes it can. People do study the psychology and behavior of animals. This isn't something I am saying because it's in the bible!

For those who say you respect science above all else - psychology is science.

Actually there was a recent study that came out a few days ago which said that animals experience a lot more than we realized including lasting emotions.

I'm not arguing that. But animals also don't have a need for self-improvement, religion, ect.

My cats certainly experience emotions. They get jealous of each other. Unless the creepy, remote stare I get from one as I pet the other means something else. :)

Do you happen to have a link? I've always found that a very interesting topic and would be very interested in reading it.

As a cat person myself, I can tell you that cats constantly clean themselves because they're just little prima-donnas. :p

I was sad to see my cat die, but am in no hurry to run right out and get another one.

Two large, slobbery dogs is all I can handle at this point.

How? I don't think we "need" either of those things. You can live quite happily without seeking self-improvement or spirituality.

You can, but the vast majority of humanity apparently cannot. Otherwise why would religion be such a common factor in human civilization?

You never seek self-improvement? I think that is something most people do, even if they don't realize it.

Religion is a way to explain the unexplainable and provide a means of control via rules of conduct or "laws." It is increasingly irrelevant which can be seen in quite strongly in the UK where a large number of people have no professed faith.

I'm not saying I don't seek self-improvement, I'm saying people don't need to.

People of faith (which I am not entirely) would disagree with you. I bet if you got to know anybody who is religious, you would change your mind as well.

Sure. If they are a vegetable. Otherwise, everybody has a strong drive to improve themselves.
